2 weeks in Orlando

My husband and I are visiting in October. We intend to have a week for the parks then a week nearby relaxing. Where would you suggest for the second week? Perhaps with a bit to see / potter around. Ideally we would like to fly both in and out of Orlando Intl.

For your second week in Orlando after spending time at the theme parks, you’ll likely want a more relaxing pace while still having opportunities to explore local attractions, charming towns, and natural areas. Here are some options to consider:

Within a short drive of Orlando:

  • Winter Park: Just 20 minutes from downtown Orlando, this area offers a picturesque, small-town vibe with tree-lined streets, boutique shopping, art galleries, and great restaurants. You can take a scenic boat tour through the canals or enjoy the Sunday farmers’ market.
  • Mount Dora: About an hour northwest of Orlando, this charming town has antique shops, lakeside views, and quaint cafes. Ideal for a slow-paced few days of strolling and light sightseeing.
  • Lake Buena Vista / Celebration: While technically near Disney, Celebration offers a small-town feel with lovely streets, lakes, walking trails, and local dining options. It’s convenient if you don’t want to stray far from Orlando but still want something relaxing.

If you’re willing to drive a bit farther for a mix of beach, nature, or city exploration:

  • St. Augustine: About 2 hours northeast of Orlando, this historic city has Spanish colonial architecture, the Castillo de San Marcos, charming streets, museums, and a lovely waterfront. Perfect for a relaxed cultural escape.
  • Florida Gulf Coast / Sarasota / Siesta Key: Around 2.5–3 hours west, this area offers beautiful beaches, small-town charm, and artsy neighborhoods. Ideal for unwinding on the sand and visiting local galleries or restaurants.
  • Daytona Beach / New Smyrna Beach: Roughly an hour east of Orlando, these areas combine a classic Florida beach vibe with casual restaurants and easy strolls along the boardwalk or historic districts.

Tips:

  • Renting a car is essential for the second week to explore beyond the parks.
  • Plan for a mix of sightseeing and downtime – a couple of days at a relaxing location with light walking, cafes, and nature can be a perfect complement to the theme park intensity.
  • Check accommodations for proximity to restaurants, shops, and any desired activities to minimize driving and maximize relaxation.

Overall, for a quieter, scenic, or cultural experience after the parks, Winter Park or Mount Dora is perfect for short drives, while St. Augustine or Sarasota provide a slightly longer but more immersive getaway with a variety of things to see and do.
