Brunch

Was recommended Morning Glory for brunch but I am now reading mixed reviews. Is it worth going? And if not are there any better places ?

Morning Glory in San Diego’s Little Italy is one of the most famous brunch spots in the city, largely because of its over-the-top décor, creative menu, and Instagram appeal. That said, it definitely gets mixed reviews, and whether it’s “worth it” depends on what kind of brunch experience you’re looking for.

Many visitors enjoy the fun, energetic vibe, the soufflé pancakes, and the adventurous drink menu. But others point out long waits (often 60–90 minutes), service that can feel rushed, and food that doesn’t always justify the hype. If your priority is a photogenic, lively brunch environment and you're willing to wait, it can be a memorable stop. If you want reliably great food, calmer ambiance, or minimal waiting, there are better options.

Here are some excellent alternatives in San Diego that consistently earn strong reviews for quality, atmosphere, and overall experience.

  • The Cottage (La Jolla) – A local favorite known for its relaxed coastal atmosphere and standout dishes like lemon ricotta pancakes, brioche French toast, and fresh scrambles. Lines can still be long on weekends, but food quality is extremely consistent.
  • Great Maple (Hillcrest) – Modern, bright, and popular for its maple bacon doughnuts, fried chicken, and seasonal brunch menu. Service is generally good, and the menu is creative without being gimmicky.
  • Snooze, an A.M. Eatery (multiple locations) – A reliable chain that’s beloved locally for its pancake flights, benedicts, and environmentally conscious practices. Waits can be long but usually move faster than Morning Glory.

If you're looking for something a bit more upscale or unique, consider these additional options that locals love.

  • Harbor Breakfast (Little Italy) – A simpler, more classic brunch choice just a short walk from Morning Glory. Great for those wanting straightforward, well-executed breakfast dishes without the big crowds.
  • Madison (University Heights) – Known for its stylish architecture and excellent brunch cocktails, offering dishes that are flavorful without being overly heavy. Reservations recommended.
  • Waypoint Public (North Park) – A family-friendly option with a creative menu and relaxed vibe. Good for groups and travelers exploring the North Park craft-beer district.

Overall, Morning Glory can be fun if your priority is atmosphere and a uniquely designed space. But if you want a brunch spot that balances taste, service, and comfort, one of the alternatives above will likely give you a better meal without the frustration.
