Help with a very quick visit to San diego

We have a few days lay over in LA so this time we thought we would head south to San Diego (having previously done LA- San Fran)

We land fairly late on a Saturday so I was thinking of just heading to a hotel in the Irvine/laguna beach area ready to start the following day early

My plan would be to drive down the coast, stopping at Torrey Pines and spending the afternoon in La Jolla

I haven’t decided where to stay that night yet but was thinking more centrally in San Diego so we can experience it a little (little Italy seems like a popular dinner place)

Monday morning we would check out balboa park and have a little stroll around San Diego before heading back up the coast l, we have a hotel booked in Huntington beach for Monday evening.

Does any one have any advice on this/ is there any must see spots I should consider

I know we don’t have long so can’t see much but open to ideas. We are young couple who like good views, chilled vibes but up for a nice bar in the evening

Thanks in advance

Your plan for a quick San Diego visit sounds well-paced and allows you to experience some of the city’s highlights without feeling rushed. Since your time is limited, focusing on coastal views, iconic neighborhoods, and a touch of culture will maximize the experience.

Saturday Night Arrival

  • Staying near Irvine or Laguna Beach is sensible given your late arrival. It positions you well for a scenic coastal drive south the next morning and avoids heavy LA traffic.
  • Consider grabbing a casual dinner near your hotel or along the coast; Laguna Beach has a few nice seaside spots for a relaxed evening.

Sunday – Coastal Drive and La Jolla

  • Start early and head south along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) for beautiful ocean views.
  • Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is a must-stop for short trails with breathtaking coastal vistas. Even a short walk to the overlook is rewarding.
  • La Jolla is ideal for strolling, watching sea lions at La Jolla Cove, and exploring the shops and galleries along Girard Avenue.
  • For lunch or coffee, try one of the cafes with ocean views or a casual seafood spot.
  • If time allows, you could drive down to Sunset Cliffs for panoramic views before heading into downtown San Diego.

Evening in San Diego – Little Italy

  • Little Italy is lively with excellent restaurants, bars, and gelato shops. A relaxed dinner here works well for your vibe.
  • Consider rooftop bars or casual wine bars for evening drinks with views of the city or bay.
  • Other options if you want a slightly quieter area: the Gaslamp Quarter for historic architecture and nightlife or Seaport Village for a casual stroll along the waterfront.

Monday – Balboa Park and Morning Stroll

  • Start at Balboa Park to enjoy gardens, architecture, and short walks between highlights. Pick one or two areas to keep it light (Botanical Building and Lily Pond are picturesque).
  • If you prefer museums, the San Diego Museum of Art or the Timken Museum of Art are compact options that won’t take long.
  • Consider a quick visit to the Embarcadero or Harbor area for morning views and photo opportunities before heading north.

General Tips

  • Plan your timing carefully; weekend traffic can slow coastal drives, especially around La Jolla and downtown San Diego.
  • Pack a swimsuit or casual beachwear if you want to dip in the ocean briefly or walk along the shore.
  • Bring layers; coastal mornings and evenings can be cool, even in summer.
  • Keep parking options in mind – Little Italy and Balboa Park have paid lots and street parking with time limits.

Overall, your itinerary balances scenic drives, short hikes, coastal stops, and a taste of the city. By focusing on these highlights, you can have a memorable yet relaxed mini-trip to San Diego before returning north.
