Thrift store recommendations

I'm taking my son (26) and his 3 female cousins (25, 28 & 28) to Savannah for a week in early June. We've rented a great house and are all very excited about our trip. I'd like to surprise the "kids" with a visit to a local thrift store to find some fun (un-stylish, dated and kitschy) outfits to wear for an awkward family photo shoot. Soooo, I'm not looking for Savannah's most upscale resale find... where do you think we'd have the most luck? Thanks!!!

What a fun idea for your family trip to Savannah! A quirky, vintage photo shoot with outfits from a local thrift store sounds like a blast. Savannah has several thrift stores that specialize in unique, kitschy, and sometimes downright dated finds—perfect for your photo op. Here are a few places you might want to check out for that perfect “awkward” look:

  • Habitat for Humanity ReStores – These nonprofit thrift stores have a mix of furniture, home goods, and clothing, often with plenty of quirky, older pieces. You might find some vintage, kitschy outfits here, and it’s also for a good cause. There are a couple of locations in Savannah, including one on Abercorn Street, which is convenient if you’re staying nearby.
  • Goodwill Savannah – The Goodwill stores in Savannah are always a hit for finding inexpensive, funky clothing. The store on Abercorn Street and the one on Montgomery Street are great places to start. You'll find a wide variety of items, and with a bit of digging, you're sure to discover some awkwardly stylish gems for your photo shoot.
  • Out of the Closet Thrift Store – This thrift store offers a wide selection of retro and vintage clothing, with plenty of fun, dated options that would be perfect for your quirky shoot. It's a great place to explore, and the vibe is laid-back, so you can take your time looking through their racks of treasures.
  • Plato's Closet – While this is a more modern consignment store, they often carry some unique and quirky items, especially if you're looking for outfits with a fun, dated flair. It’s worth stopping by for a mix of vintage and second-hand clothing, especially for trendy yet retro finds.
  • Red Light Recycling – This is a great place to find some truly one-of-a-kind items. Known for its eclectic mix of vintage and retro clothing, furniture, and accessories, it’s a fun stop for quirky outfits that would be perfect for a humorous family photo shoot. It’s not the most traditional thrift store, so you’ll definitely find something unique here.

In general, you’ll find a good mix of funky clothing and vintage finds at these places, but for the most kitschy, out-of-date styles, I’d recommend starting with Goodwill and the Habitat for Humanity ReStores. Be sure to give yourselves plenty of time to dig through the racks—you never know what retro treasure you’ll find! And with a little luck, you’ll all walk away with some hilarious outfits for your photo shoot.

Have a fantastic trip to Savannah and enjoy your quirky family photo shoot!
