Recreational shrimping
Hello I will be in PCB next week and other places I have stayed in Florida locals recommended places to throw net for shrimp. Wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations for this area?
Thank you
Recreational shrimping is a popular activity along the Florida Panhandle, including Panama City Beach. Before heading out, it’s important to be aware of Florida’s rules and regulations for shrimping to ensure a safe and legal experience.
Regulations and tips for shrimping in Panama City Beach:
- Recreational shrimping is allowed in state waters using cast nets or dip nets. The use of trawl nets or other mechanical harvesting methods is restricted to commercial fishermen.
- You must follow Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) regulations, including bag limits and size limits. For example, there is a bag limit for live shrimp per person if keeping them for personal use.
- No license is required for recreational shrimping in saltwater for residents or visitors, but you must comply with all state rules.
- Always check the current season dates and any local advisories, as these can affect where and when shrimping is allowed.
Recommended areas in and near Panama City Beach for recreational shrimping:
- St. Andrews Bay: A popular spot for cast-net shrimping with easy shoreline access and plenty of shrimp during season.
- East Bay and West Bay areas: These bays are known for good shrimp populations and provide quiet spots away from crowded beaches.
- Near piers and jetties: Public fishing piers often have easy access and can be productive areas for netting shrimp in shallow waters.
- Bayou and inlets around Shell Island: Provides excellent conditions for catching smaller shrimp and is often recommended by locals for a fun experience.
Additional tips:
- Bring a cooler with ice to keep your catch fresh if you plan to take shrimp home.
- Go during high tide or in the early evening, as shrimp are more active and easier to catch.
- Wear waterproof shoes or boots, as many shrimping spots have muddy or sandy bottoms.
- Ask local bait and tackle shops for current hot spots—they often have the most up-to-date advice on shrimp abundance and locations.
By following local regulations and choosing the right spots, you can enjoy a rewarding recreational shrimping experience in Panama City Beach and take home fresh Gulf shrimp for a tasty meal.
