Port day from Cruise in July
Hi, we have never been to the Key West and are really looking forward to our port day from our cruise. It is in July and I'm a little worried about the heat. Can you all please give some advice to help us streamline the day and maximize our enjoyment in Key West? It looks like we can get off the ship pretty early, so with a day in port, what do you advise doing and in what order and how can we make it easy to get around and handle the heat etc. Thank you!!
Visiting Key West on a cruise port day in July can be hot and humid, so planning your day efficiently is key to maximizing enjoyment and staying comfortable. Since you can disembark early, it’s best to have a rough itinerary and a way to get around quickly to see the highlights without overheating.
Getting around:
- Consider renting bicycles or scooters for the day. Key West is very bike-friendly, and this allows you to cover more ground than walking in the heat.
- Another option is the Conch Train or a hop-on/hop-off trolley, which gives you shade and reduces walking, though stops can be limited.
- Walking is fine for short distances around Old Town, but bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and water.
Suggested itinerary for a port day:
- Morning: Head to Mallory Square and the Historic Seaport area. Grab coffee or breakfast and enjoy the early morning waterfront before it gets too hot.
- Mid-morning: Explore Duval Street, visit a few shops, and see landmarks such as the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum or the Key West Lighthouse. Plan indoor stops during the hottest part of the day to stay cool.
- Lunch: Choose a shaded or air-conditioned restaurant along Duval Street or near the harbor. Key West is known for fresh seafood, so trying local fare is a must.
- Afternoon: Visit Southernmost Point, walk along the beach or enjoy a short boat excursion if you want to get on the water and cool off. Consider a glass-bottom boat tour or snorkeling trip.
- Late afternoon: Head back toward the cruise port, stopping for last-minute shopping or drinks along the way. Stay hydrated and plan enough time to return before your ship’s departure.
Additional tips:
- July is hot and humid, often with afternoon showers, so bring a light rain jacket or poncho just in case.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and reapply frequently, especially if you are outdoors or on a boat.
- Stay hydrated and take breaks in shaded areas or air-conditioned spots whenever possible.
- If you want to maximize your sightseeing without getting too hot, plan outdoor activities for early morning and late afternoon, reserving midday for indoor attractions or dining.
By planning your route, choosing efficient transportation, and scheduling indoor breaks during peak heat, you can enjoy a full day of Key West highlights without feeling exhausted by the summer sun.
