We are interested in booking a vacation rental for next spring. It's available on VRBO, Booking.com, and Vacasa. I have used all 3 platforms for previous trips and have no complaints.
The rate is best on Vacasa, however the cancellation policy is most stringent there, as well, whereas with the other 2, the cancellation policy is much easier to deal with. If I would book on VRBO, then cancel before their cancellation policy kicks in, would it then reappear in inventory on Vacasa? Does anyone know? With 13 of us in the mix, it's hard to think something might not come up in the next 9-10 months. I suppose I should look at cancellation insurance, as well.
Thanks especially for any truly knowledgeable feedback.
When booking a vacation rental through multiple platforms like VRBO, Booking.com, and Vacasa, inventory management and cancellation policies can vary significantly, so it’s good to think through your options carefully, especially with a large group of 13.
Here are some key points to consider:
First, each platform has its own inventory system, even if it’s technically the same property. Typically, if you book on VRBO and then cancel before the cancellation deadline, the property may or may not immediately appear back on Vacasa’s site. This depends on whether the property manager synchronizes availability in real-time across all platforms. Many larger management companies, including Vacasa, do update calendars automatically, but sometimes there can be a slight lag, which may mean the property is temporarily unavailable or not yet listed again.
Second, the cancellation policy is crucial. Vacasa might offer the lowest rate but have a strict policy, which could be risky if plans change. VRBO or Booking.com might have more flexible options, allowing you to cancel without significant penalties, which provides peace of mind for large groups where plans are harder to finalize far in advance.
Additional considerations include:
In summary, while the property may reappear on Vacasa after canceling on VRBO, it is not guaranteed due to timing and synchronization differences. Booking with the platform that offers the right balance of price and cancellation flexibility is usually the safest approach, and purchasing cancellation insurance is highly recommended for large groups and long-term planning.
