Sequoia Tree Viewing
I have the opportunity to fly to Fresno for a 3 day weekend late June. I typically spend months planning trips, but I have always wanted to see the Sequoias and hate to lose this opportunity if it is possible figure out the logistics. I would appreciate advice! Thank you in advance!
A 3-day weekend from Fresno is enough to get a memorable experience of Sequoia National Park, especially if your main goal is to see the giant sequoias and enjoy some scenic drives and short hikes. Late June is a great time as most roads, including the Generals Highway, should be fully open, and the weather is usually pleasant.
Here is a suggested approach for planning your trip:
- Day 1: Arrival in Fresno & Travel to Sequoia: Arrive in Fresno early, rent a car, and drive to the park. Depending on your energy level, you can make a few stops on the Generals Highway and take short walks to see some notable trees like the General Sherman Tree. Stay overnight in or near the park—options include Wuksachi Lodge (mid-park) or lodges/cabins in Three Rivers for a bit more flexibility.
- Day 2: Explore Sequoia National Park: Spend a full day exploring. Key highlights for a short trip include:
- General Sherman Tree (easily accessible, iconic)
- Moro Rock (steep climb but only 0.25 miles, panoramic views)
- Giant Forest Museum and nearby trails (several short trails under 2 miles for seeing more groves)
- Optional: Crescent Meadow loop (easy 1.8-mile hike, great for photography and wildlife spotting)
- Day 3: Morning hike or drive, return to Fresno: Consider a short morning hike or scenic drive through the park before returning to Fresno. If you have time, you could take a quick side trip to Kings Canyon National Park to see Zumwalt Meadow or Roaring River Falls. Head back to Fresno to catch your flight.
Additional tips:
- Start your days early to avoid crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures for hikes.
- Pack snacks, water, and layers; even in June, mornings can be cool in the park.
- If lodging in the park is full, staying in Three Rivers is the next best option, providing easy access to the park’s south entrance.
- Car is essential; public transportation in and around Sequoia is very limited.
- With only 3 days, prioritize giant sequoia groves and iconic spots rather than attempting long backcountry hikes.
With careful planning, a 3-day trip from Fresno can give you a wonderful Sequoia experience, combining iconic trees, scenic views, and manageable hikes, all without feeling overly rushed.
