Drive or walk

Key West is a very walkable and compact city, especially in the Old Town area where most of the main attractions, restaurants, bars, and shops are located. Many visitors find that walking or using a bike, scooter, or electric cart is much more convenient than driving, particularly because parking can be limited and expensive.

If you are staying near Duval Street or the historic district, you can easily access most sites on foot. Walking allows you to enjoy the architecture, colorful streets, and local shops at a leisurely pace.

However, if you plan to explore areas outside of Old Town, such as the southern beaches, Fort Zachary Taylor, or the southernmost point, having a car or renting a bike/scooter can be helpful. Driving within the town itself is often slower due to traffic and limited parking.

  • Walking: Best for exploring Old Town, Duval Street, Mallory Square, and nearby attractions. Convenient and scenic.
  • Bike or scooter rental: Great option to cover more ground while still avoiding parking hassles.
  • Car: Useful only if you plan to visit attractions farther away from central Key West, but parking can be challenging and costly.

Other tips:

  • Consider using the free or low-cost trolleys and shuttle services for longer distances within the island.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated, especially in July when temperatures can be high.
  • Evening strolls are pleasant as traffic is lighter, and you can enjoy live music and nightlife without needing a car.

In summary, for most first-time visitors or those staying centrally, walking or using a bike/scooter is recommended over driving. Cars are mainly necessary for outer areas or if you have mobility concerns.
