Star Gazing Dark Skies

It looks like the Ellsworth area would be great for dark skies and star gazing. Looks like we may have to travel a little bit out of town. Does anyone have any suggestions where this could be done safely? Without trespassing?

Also, looking for some must sees that are not full of tourist’s, although, yes, I am a tourist. Thanks!

Hi there!

You're right—Ellsworth and the surrounding area are fantastic for stargazing due to the dark skies, especially as you're close to Acadia National Park, which is designated as a Dark Sky Park. Here are some great options for stargazing and enjoying the night sky without trespassing:

  • Acadia National Park: This is a prime location for stargazing, especially at places like the Cadillac Mountain summit or the Jordan Pond area. Cadillac Mountain, being the highest point on the East Coast, offers stunning views of the stars. Just be sure to check the park's guidelines and avoid areas with restricted access after dark.
  • Schoodic Peninsula: This area is part of Acadia National Park but is less crowded and offers an excellent spot for stargazing. The Schoodic Head Trailhead offers panoramic views and minimal light pollution. There’s a parking lot at the Schoodic Peninsula’s main overlook where you can safely park your car and take in the stars.
  • Farm Cove Community Land: A local hidden gem near the Ellsworth area, it has very low light pollution and offers a peaceful place for star-gazing. Just be respectful of the land, and always ensure you’re in public or designated areas.
  • Blue Hill Mountain: If you're willing to drive a bit further, Blue Hill Mountain is another great option. It has some of the best dark skies in the region and offers a less crowded alternative to the popular Cadillac Mountain.

As for some off-the-beaten-path spots that aren't overrun with tourists, here are a few suggestions:

  • Sumner Hill: A quiet spot with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, Sumner Hill is a great place to explore. It’s a peaceful spot that’s not overrun with crowds and offers nice walking paths with great views.
  • Branch Lake: Located just outside of Ellsworth, this lake is a hidden gem. It's not as touristy as the lakes around Acadia, and you can enjoy the tranquility, maybe even do some paddling or hiking around the area.
  • Mount Desert Island’s lesser-known trails: While Acadia’s more popular trails like Precipice and Jordan Pond get crowded, there are plenty of quieter hikes, such as the Ship Harbor Trail, the Wonderland Trail, and the Western Mountain Trail, where you can enjoy the beauty of the park without the crowds.
  • Sunrise or sunset at Seal Cove: A quiet, lovely coastal area that’s often overlooked by tourists. The scenery is stunning, and you can enjoy the peace and beauty of the region without the usual crowds.

Lastly, while stargazing, always check the weather forecast as cloudy nights can sometimes obscure the view. It’s also a good idea to bring a blanket or lawn chairs and some warm clothes for those chilly Maine nights!

Enjoy your time in Ellsworth and the surrounding areas, and happy stargazing!
