1 day in Beijing - Help with itinerary

Hi,

Need help with 1 day itinerary in Beijing.

I have been to Being before, been to China few times, but this time with parents and family.

Will arrive to the airport 10:00 on a Saturday next month.

Staying in hotel near Wangfujing street, near the Wangfujing metro station.

Hopefully will be at the hotel around 13:00 and then plan to visit the Forbidden City (will book tickets in advance).

Lets say we out from the Forbidden City at 16:00.

Where should we plan to go next?

The next day we have a private driver and planned to visit Temple of Heaven and Mutaniyu Wall and then to airport, flight leaves at 19:00.

Should we visit Temple of Heaven after Forbidden City?

What else should we then visit the next day?

Will have a walk through Wangfujing street and Qianmen street too.

Thanks in advance

With just one full day in Beijing for sightseeing with family, staying near Wangfujing gives you a convenient base close to many central attractions. Since you’ll arrive around 13:00 and plan to visit the Forbidden City first, here’s a detailed itinerary for your short stay.

Day 1: Forbidden City and central Beijing

  • 13:00 – Check-in at your hotel near Wangfujing.
  • 13:30 – Grab a quick lunch nearby. Wangfujing area has many restaurants serving both local and international food.
  • 14:00 – Head to the Forbidden City. Pre-booked tickets will save time. You can explore the main halls, courtyards, and gardens. Allocate about 2-2.5 hours, leaving around 16:00.

After exiting the Forbidden City around 16:00, consider these options for the late afternoon:

  • Tiananmen Square: Just south of the Forbidden City, it’s easy to walk to. Spend 30-45 minutes exploring the square, the Monument to the People’s Heroes, and nearby buildings like the Great Hall of the People.
  • Jingshan Park: Right behind the Forbidden City. A short walk up the hill gives panoramic views of the city and the entire Forbidden City – perfect for family photos.
  • Wangfujing Street: In the early evening, walk along Wangfujing Street. Enjoy the pedestrian shopping street, local snacks, and souvenirs. If your family enjoys food markets, the Wangfujing Snack Street is an interesting stop.

If time and energy allow, you could also add:

  • Qianmen Street: Another historic shopping street south of Tiananmen Square. It’s less crowded in the evening and has a charming mix of old-style architecture and modern shops.

Day 2: Temple of Heaven and Great Wall

Since you have a private driver and a later flight at 19:00, your plan to visit Temple of Heaven and Mutianyu Great Wall works well. Do not visit Temple of Heaven on Day 1 after the Forbidden City, as it would be rushed and parks typically close around 17:00 in late spring/summer.

  • Morning: Start at Temple of Heaven. Walk around the park, see the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Allocate about 1.5-2 hours.
  • Midday: Drive to Mutianyu Great Wall (approx. 1.5 hours). Explore the less crowded sections and consider the cable car up and slide down options for easier hiking with family. Allocate 2-3 hours here.
  • Late afternoon: Return to central Beijing, allowing enough time to reach the airport for your 19:00 flight. Beijing traffic can be unpredictable, so leaving by 15:00-15:30 is safest.

Additional tips:

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes – both Forbidden City and Great Wall require a fair amount of walking.
  • Carry water and light snacks, especially for the Great Wall excursion.
  • Use taxis or metro for Day 1, as traffic is dense, but your private driver on Day 2 makes traveling to Mutianyu convenient.
  • Adjust the pace based on your parents’ comfort – prioritizing views and main attractions can be better than trying to cover too much.

This plan balances sightseeing, walking, and relaxation while hitting major highlights and allowing some leisure time for evening exploration near your hotel.
