hotel near University of Miami (Rosenthel campus tour)

We are planning to tour the Rosenthel Atmospheric Science Center at the University of Miami next month and were wondering which hotels are nearby? Are there any hotels on campus? We will be traveling as a family of 3, 2 seniors and a teenage son. We prefer a hotel that offers free breakfast and parking, if possible. Thanks!

The University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science is located on Virginia Key, which is a short drive from the main Coral Gables campus. There are no on-campus hotels at the Rosenstiel Center itself, so you’ll need to stay nearby in Coral Gables or Coconut Grove.

Coral Gables is the most convenient area for visiting the University of Miami’s main campus and still within a reasonable drive to the Rosenstiel Center. Here are some hotel options that are family-friendly and offer amenities like free breakfast and parking:

  • Hampton Inn & Suites Coral Gables: Located near Miracle Mile and the Coral Gables area, offers free breakfast, free parking, and comfortable rooms suitable for a small family.
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton Miami-Coral Gables: Suite-style accommodations with kitchenettes, free breakfast, and parking. Great for families wanting more space and a longer stay feel.
  • Hyatt Regency Coral Gables: A bit more upscale, has on-site dining, parking options, and is very convenient for accessing both the campus and local attractions.
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites Miami Coral Gables: Another solid choice with complimentary breakfast, parking, and easy access to the university area.

If you prefer being closer to the Rosenstiel Center on Virginia Key, your options are more limited and typically boutique hotels or vacation rentals. A short drive from Coconut Grove or Key Biscayne is common, and many families choose rentals with kitchen access. Driving to the center is about 15-20 minutes from Coral Gables, so staying in Coral Gables or Coconut Grove provides a balance of comfort, amenities, and proximity.

Other tips:

  • Book early if visiting during a busy month, as Coral Gables hotels can fill quickly.
  • Check for hotels that include parking, as Miami can be pricey for daily parking fees.
  • If your family prefers walking to restaurants and shops, Coral Gables is very pedestrian-friendly compared to the Virginia Key area.

In summary, staying in Coral Gables or Coconut Grove gives you easy access to the University of Miami’s main campus and Rosenstiel Center while offering the family-friendly amenities you’re seeking.
