Wolf’s head camping June 23-27
Hi! We are camping at wolf’s head with two small kids. Can anyone recommend the best hikes/ beaches for kids in the area, or any tips/ recommendations in the area? Activities, fun kids spots, good cafes, food, music? Should we bring our bikes?
Thanks!
It sounds like you're in for an amazing adventure at Wolf's Head in Freeport with your kids! This area of Maine is beautiful, and there are plenty of family-friendly activities to make your camping experience fun and memorable. Here are some recommendations for hikes, beaches, and other activities in the area:
Hikes and Nature Walks for Kids:
- Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park – Just a short drive from your campsite, this park offers easy-to-moderate trails perfect for families with kids. The Underwood Trail is a nice, short hike that loops around the coast and offers great views of the Casco Bay. It’s a relatively flat walk, making it ideal for younger children. You can also check out the Salt Marsh Trail, which offers a bit more of a nature walk through the salt marsh and a fun opportunity for kids to learn about the local wildlife.
- Bradbury Mountain State Park – Located a bit further inland, Bradbury Mountain offers several short and scenic hikes. The Summit Trail is a relatively easy climb to the top, where you’ll have a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. It’s a fun hike for kids, especially if they’re interested in the challenge of reaching the top. The park also has a great picnic area where you can relax after the hike.
Beaches and Water Fun:
- Grindstone Beach – A quiet and peaceful beach located near Freeport, Grindstone Beach is perfect for a family outing. The calm waters make it a good spot for kids to explore the shoreline, collect seashells, and splash around. It’s not overly crowded, so it’s a nice, relaxing spot for a beach day.
- South Freeport Beach – Another great beach for families, this spot has a gentle slope into the water, which is ideal for little ones. The beach is fairly secluded, which gives you plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the day. The surrounding area also has some beautiful walking paths, which can be a great way to explore with your kids.

- Freeport's L.L. Bean Flagship Store – While not a traditional "tourist attraction," L.L. Bean is a classic stop in Freeport, especially if you have kids. The store has an indoor shooting range, a pet-friendly outdoor area, and a large selection of outdoor gear that could be fun to explore. There's also a giant boot sculpture outside that’s perfect for a photo op!
- Wolfe’s Neck Farm – Just a short drive from your campsite, this working farm is perfect for kids. They offer family-friendly farm tours where you can see the animals and learn about sustainable farming practices. It’s a great place for a fun and educational outing.
- Freeport Community Library – If you're looking for a quiet break from outdoor activities, the local library has a great children's section and often hosts family-friendly events, storytimes, or craft activities for kids. It’s a nice place to take a break during a busy day.
Food and Cafes:
- Coastal Café – A great family-friendly spot that offers sandwiches, soups, and homemade pastries. It’s casual and perfect for a laid-back lunch or breakfast.
- Casco Bay Brewing Company – For a more relaxed dinner, the Casco Bay Brewing Company offers a casual atmosphere with some nice outdoor seating. It’s not too fancy, but they do offer a kids' menu, and the laid-back vibe is perfect for families.
- Wild Oats Bakery & Café – Located in downtown Freeport, this is a great spot for breakfast or a light lunch. They offer delicious sandwiches, baked goods, and fresh smoothies that your kids will love.
Music and Entertainment:
- Freeport Community Events – Depending on the dates you’re visiting, Freeport may have live music or events happening in the downtown area. The town often has outdoor concerts, art shows, or festivals during the summer months, which can be a great family activity in the evening.
