How hot is it in mid-August?

We've been to Key West a number of times but not in mid-August. How hot and humid will it be and is anything going on beside Rum fest?

Visiting Key West in mid-August means you’ll be in the heart of summer, so you should expect hot and humid conditions. Average daytime highs are typically in the low to mid-90s °F (about 32–35°C), while nighttime lows are around 80°F (27°C). Humidity is high, often above 70%, which can make the heat feel more intense. Afternoon showers or brief thunderstorms are common, as August is part of Florida’s rainy season.

Besides Rum Festival, which usually takes place in mid-August, Key West often has a few other ongoing events and activities during this period. Some options include:

  • Live music: Many bars and restaurants along Duval Street host nightly performances, from jazz to rock and island-style music.
  • Sunset celebrations: Mallory Square hosts its famous Sunset Celebration with street performers, local artists, and food vendors every evening.
  • Art galleries and local exhibits: Several galleries around Key West often have summer exhibits or special showings.
  • Water activities: Kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and boat tours are popular ways to stay cool and enjoy the waters around the island.
  • Historic tours: Attractions like the Ernest Hemingway Home, Key West Lighthouse, and Truman Little White House are open and less crowded than peak winter months.

Tip: Because of the heat and humidity, plan for morning or late afternoon activities and take advantage of indoor or shaded spots during the hottest hours. Staying hydrated and using sun protection is essential.
