What to do on last day - Waikoloa

We’re checking out at 11am but flight out of Kona isn’t until 10pm……recommendations of what to do for the day, relatively inexpensive and preferably not wet as we’re flying back to UK via LAX so have a lot of travelling to do! Staying in Waikoloa beach area

On your last day in Waikoloa with a late flight out of Kona, you have several options for spending your time that are inexpensive, relatively dry, and won’t tire you out before a long journey back to the UK. Since you’ll be checking out at 11 AM, you can plan activities that allow easy access to food, shopping, or light sightseeing nearby.

Here are some ideas:

  • Waikoloa Village and Kings’ Shops: Spend a few hours strolling around Kings’ Shops and the nearby Queens’ Marketplace. You can browse local boutiques, pick up souvenirs, or enjoy a coffee at one of the cafes. This is mostly shaded and covered, so you won’t get wet.
  • Petroglyph and Cultural Sites: Visit the nearby Waikoloa Petroglyph Reserve. It’s a short, easy walk with minimal exertion. You can explore ancient Hawaiian rock carvings and learn a bit about local culture.
  • Local Art Galleries and Museums: Check out small galleries in Waikoloa or in nearby towns. Some showcase local artists and Hawaiian crafts, and entry is often free or low cost.

If you want to combine sightseeing with a light meal:

  • Enjoy lunch at a local café or food truck. Many offer casual Hawaiian fare at reasonable prices, and you can sit in shaded or indoor areas.
  • Take a scenic drive along the Kohala Coast. Even without stopping for a swim, the views of lava fields, coastline, and Mauna Kea are beautiful and relaxing. Consider short stops for photos.
  • Visit Anaeho’omalu Bay (A-Bay) briefly. You can walk along the shoreline or sit under shaded areas without getting in the water.

Additional practical tips for your last day:

  • Store luggage at your hotel or a nearby facility after checkout so you can move freely without carrying bags.
  • Plan your timing to allow for 1–1.5 hours to return to Kona Airport, factoring in rental car return.
  • Bring snacks, water, and a light jacket, as mornings and evenings can be breezy.

By combining light sightseeing, shopping, and a scenic drive, you can enjoy your final hours in Waikoloa without overexerting yourself or getting wet before your long journey.
