One day in Portland - What to see

Hi,

We're on our way back to Philly from Quebec, Canada and we'd like to stop by Portland, ME for a day. Since it's a short time, I'd love to hear suggestions on what must see in Old Port. Also, we'd like to try Lobster roll. Most of the menu show it's market price. If you're there, do you have any idea avg. price per roll? and Which restaurtant do you recommend for trying lobster roll/seafood in general with reasonable price? (sorry we're on budget so, no interested in fine dining). Thanks so much.

Portland, Maine is a charming coastal city and even with just one day, you can capture its essence, especially around the Old Port area. The cobblestone streets, historic brick buildings, and working waterfront make it a delightful place to explore on foot.

Here are some must-see spots and activities for a day in Portland:

  • Old Port: Wander the cobblestone streets lined with boutiques, galleries, and coffee shops. It's lively and photogenic.
  • Portland Head Light: A short drive or bike ride from Old Port, this iconic lighthouse in Fort Williams Park is one of Maine's most photographed spots.
  • Casco Bay Ferry Terminal: If you have time, consider a quick scenic ferry ride to see nearby islands or just enjoy views of the harbor.
  • Street Art & Murals: Portland has a growing street art scene, and walking around the downtown streets you’ll find colorful murals.

For lobster rolls and seafood on a reasonable budget, here are some popular spots in Portland:

  • The Highroller Lobster Co.: Known for lobster rolls, lobster tacos, and seafood bowls. Average price for a classic lobster roll is around $22–$26, depending on market fluctuations.

Tips for the day:

  • Arrive early to avoid lines at popular lobster roll spots.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone streets.
  • Consider grabbing a coffee or pastry at a local café like Tandem Coffee Roasters or The Holy Donut.
  • Keep some cash handy as smaller establishments may not take cards for small orders.

Overall, even on a budget, you can enjoy Portland’s waterfront charm, try iconic lobster rolls, and stroll through its lively streets in a day.
