Safe to leave luggage in target lot?
Hi! We want to stop at Target when we arrive. Is it okay to leave the luggage in the car for a short shopping trip? We are staying on the North Shore so would prefer not to drive back to Lihue the next day. Thanks!
Leaving luggage in your car at Target on Kauai for a short shopping trip is generally possible, but there are some important precautions and considerations to keep in mind.
Here’s what you should know:
- Safety of Leaving Luggage: Kauai is relatively safe compared to many urban areas, but thefts from vehicles can happen anywhere, including parking lots. It’s safer to avoid leaving valuables in the car, even if it’s just for a short time.
- Visibility: Make sure your luggage is out of sight. Place items in the trunk or cover them with a blanket. Bags visible through windows can attract opportunistic theft.
- Duration: Short shopping trips of 15–30 minutes are less risky than leaving luggage for hours. If you plan to shop longer, consider alternatives such as storing luggage at a nearby facility or bringing only essentials with you.
- Timing: Parking lots can be busy, so choose a well-lit area close to the store entrance where there is foot traffic. Avoid isolated corners.
Other Options to Consider:
- Leave luggage in your rental car but carry your valuables (wallet, phone, electronics) with you.
- Check if your rental company or accommodation offers early luggage drop-off or short-term storage.
- If staying near the North Shore, consider stopping at a shopping location closer to your accommodation after arrival, minimizing the need to leave items unattended in Lihue.
In summary, leaving luggage in the Target lot for a quick stop is usually fine if you take basic precautions: keep items out of sight, choose a visible parking spot, and don’t leave valuables in the car. For peace of mind, carrying essential items or arranging short-term storage is the safest approach.
