August isn't the best time to travel to the Keys with it being Hurricane/Rainy season but Erin just passed and I don't see anything in the weather I looked up that should stop me from going next week. Any weather related reason not to head there next week? I appreciate the feedback.
August can indeed be a tricky time to visit the Florida Keys, as it falls right in the middle of hurricane season. That being said, it sounds like you’ve already checked for any weather concerns following Tropical Storm Erin, and there’s nothing imminent that should stop you from going next week. However, there are a few weather-related things to keep in mind when traveling during this time:
1. Hurricane Season:
While you mentioned that Erin has passed, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the weather, as hurricanes and tropical storms can develop quickly during August and September. While it’s not certain that another storm will form, it’s wise to stay updated on any potential storms as they form in the Atlantic. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) or your hotel can offer up-to-date information on any storms that may be coming your way.
2. Rain and Humidity:
August in the Keys tends to be hot, humid, and prone to afternoon showers or thunderstorms. This can often be brief, but it can affect outdoor activities or beach time, so it’s important to be prepared for rain. You may want to pack light, breathable clothing and be ready for some rain, especially in the late afternoons or evenings.
3. Heat Index:
The heat can be intense in August, with daytime temperatures reaching into the 90s°F (32°C) and humidity making it feel even hotter. Make sure to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and plan any outdoor activities for early mornings or later evenings when it’s cooler.
4. Fewer Tourists (A Positive):
On the flip side, because it’s hurricane season, there are fewer tourists in the Keys during this time, which means less crowded attractions, restaurants, and beaches. If you're looking for a quieter, more relaxed experience, this could be a good time to visit despite the weather challenges.
5. Weather-Related Disruptions:
Conclusion:
If you’re flexible and okay with a few showers and the possibility of warm, humid conditions, there’s no reason not to visit the Keys next week. Just stay prepared for the weather, monitor storm developments, and have a backup plan for indoor activities if a storm or heavy rain does hit. Many Key West attractions, restaurants, and bars are still enjoyable rain or shine!
Safe travels and enjoy your trip to the Keys!
