Places not to miss

In a couple weeks my daughter and I are visiting. We’ll be flying into Boston and driving to Ogunquit, which is where we’re staying. On our drive north, what should we stop at along the way? Fun little stops, whether it’s a cute shop or a great place to eat, lighthouse?? Help me out please

Driving from Boston up to Ogunquit offers a wonderful opportunity to explore charming coastal towns, scenic views, and iconic New England stops along the way. Since your trip is just a couple of weeks away, you’ll be catching some early fall colors as well, which can make the drive even more picturesque.

Here are some highlights and stops to consider for your drive:

  • Salem, MA: Known for its historic witch trials, Salem has quirky shops, cafes, and the Salem Witch Museum. If you enjoy a mix of history and fun, a quick stroll through downtown is worthwhile.
  • Gloucester & Rockport, MA: Both towns are classic coastal gems. Gloucester has the iconic Fishermen’s Memorial and working harbor, while Rockport has cute art galleries, shops, and the famous Motif #1, a small red fishing shack that’s one of the most painted buildings in the country.
  • Portsmouth, NH: A lively town with a historic downtown, boutiques, and great eateries. You might consider a stop for lunch or coffee here.
  • York & Cape Neddick, ME: Home to Nubble Lighthouse, one of Maine’s most photographed lighthouses. It’s a must-see for scenic views and photo opportunities.
  • Kennebunkport, ME: A charming coastal village with boutique shops, art galleries, and good seafood. Even a short walk along Dock Square or the harbor is lovely.

Other tips and fun ideas:

  • Look out for roadside farm stands – Maine is full of small vendors selling fresh apples, pumpkins, cider, and other local treats in early fall.
  • Consider a short beach stop along the coast – Ogunquit and the surrounding towns have several beautiful beaches if you want to stretch your legs.
  • Keep an eye out for small cafes or bakeries in the towns along Route 1 – lobster rolls, homemade pies, and local pastries can be great snack stops.

Overall, taking your time and allowing a few unplanned stops along the coast will make your drive more memorable. The combination of lighthouses, seaside views, and quaint towns offers the perfect introduction to southern Maine before you settle into Ogunquit.
