Stops

Suggestions for stops between Big Pine Key and Key West that are easy to get to.

The drive from Big Pine Key to Key West is only about 30–35 miles, so it’s a short trip. However, there are several interesting and easy-to-access stops along the way that make the drive more enjoyable and give you a chance to experience the unique Keys environment.

Here are some recommended stops:

  • Bahia Honda State Park: Just past Big Pine Key, this park is famous for its scenic beaches, picnic areas, and walking trails. The Old Bahia Honda Bridge offers a great photo opportunity and some snorkeling options.
  • Seven Mile Bridge Viewpoints: There are a few pull-offs along the bridge where you can safely stop for photos and take in the stunning ocean views.
  • Marathon/Curry Hammock State Park: If you haven’t already visited this area south of Big Pine Key, it’s a great place for a short nature walk or to enjoy the mangrove ecosystem. Easy access from US-1.
  • Key Deer Viewing on Big Pine Key: If you missed it before, there are several safe pull-offs to spot the tiny endangered Key deer near Big Pine Key before heading further south.

Closer to Key West, the main stops are limited as the area becomes more developed, but a few options include:

  • Blue Hole / Key West Wildlife Center: Located near Key West, this small spot allows for a short walk and wildlife viewing.
  • Local Fruit Stands: Along US-1, especially closer to Key West, you can stop at small roadside stands selling fresh tropical fruits, key lime products, and souvenirs.
  • Historic Sites Near Key West Entrance: If time allows, stop at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park just before entering Key West for beaches, picnic areas, and a historic fort.

Overall, the drive is short enough that even just one or two stops—Bahia Honda and a Seven Mile Bridge viewpoint—can make it memorable without taking too much time. The scenic beauty and unique ecosystems along the way are the real highlights.
