Part of Mallory Square Blocked Off

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: In the interest of public safety, the outer 45 feet of Mallory Square are closed to all traffic, including foot traffic.

An assessment of this “wharf” area of the square shows that there is some deterioration. With the utmost caution and concern for public safety, the City of Key West is barricading off the area from the planters to the edge.

Residents and visitors can still enjoy our beautiful sunset and the vendors that make up the celebration. However, it will be moved back from the water’s edge.

Recently, the City of Key West has closed off the outer 45 feet of Mallory Square, including both pedestrian and vehicular traffic, due to safety concerns. An assessment revealed deterioration in this wharf area, and the closure is a precautionary measure to prevent accidents or injuries.

Key points regarding the closure:

  • The affected area extends from the planters to the water’s edge.
  • All foot traffic and vehicle access in this section are prohibited.
  • The closure is effective immediately and will remain until repairs or improvements are made to ensure safety.

Impact on visitors:

  • The sunset celebration, a popular daily event, will continue, but it has been moved back from the water’s edge.
  • Vendors will still be present and operating within the accessible parts of the square.
  • Visitors can still enjoy views of the sunset and participate in the festivities, though the experience will be slightly set back from the waterfront.

Additional considerations:

  • It is advisable to respect all barricades and signage for your safety and the safety of others.
  • Photography or viewing opportunities may be slightly restricted in the blocked-off area.
  • Check for updates from the City of Key West or local news sources for information on reopening or repair progress.

In summary, while a portion of Mallory Square is temporarily closed for public safety, visitors can still enjoy the sunset and vendors, but the celebration is set back from the waterfront until repairs are completed.
