Whaler vs Outrigger

Last minute planning a trip for next week!

Hadn’t really considered the Whaler but see it has a lot of fans here - do you see that as above the Outrigger also?

Seems like Black Rock is a good place to be for easy access/ good snorkeling and that is a priority for sure. Is it to late in the year for Wailea snorkeling?

Less kids is better (we’re 60s yr active couple) - pluses = not extra add ons for parking. Easy breakfast and dinner at resort would be great though.

Just too many choices!

It sounds like you’re narrowing down your options for an amazing trip to Maui! Both the Whaler and Outrigger are excellent choices, but they do offer slightly different experiences, especially depending on your priorities.

The Whaler is a very popular option, especially for those who love easy access to the beach and want a great location for snorkeling, which is why it’s got such a dedicated following. It’s located right on Kaanapali Beach, close to Black Rock, which is a fantastic spot for snorkeling and has good marine life year-round. The Whaler also has spacious condo-style rooms with kitchenettes, so you can enjoy meals in your room if you want to. For a more relaxed, upscale atmosphere, the Whaler is often considered to be a step up from the Outrigger, with a quieter, more serene vibe.

The Outrigger, while also in a great location on Kaanapali Beach, tends to be more family-friendly and can be a bit busier, especially in peak seasons. It’s a great option if you don’t mind a livelier atmosphere, but given your preference for fewer kids, you might find the Whaler to be a better match for you. The Outrigger is still a solid option with good amenities, but the overall vibe is more energetic.

  • The Whaler is right next to Black Rock, a prime spot for snorkeling, and it tends to have a quieter atmosphere, making it a great choice for an active couple in their 60s.
  • The Outrigger is also in a fantastic location, but it tends to attract more families, so it may be livelier, especially around the holidays.
  • Both offer access to dining options on-site, but the Whaler's condos may give you more flexibility to cook some meals in your room if that’s important.
  • Parking is included at the Whaler without additional fees, which is definitely a plus compared to resorts that charge extra for parking.

As for snorkeling in Wailea, it’s still a good time to snorkel there in December. While the weather is cooler, the waters are generally calm, and you can still enjoy spots like Molokini Crater and Makena Beach. However, if you’re looking for easier access to snorkeling directly from the beach, Kaanapali and Black Rock are definitely more convenient.

Overall, the Whaler seems like it might be a better fit for your preferences—less crowded, quieter, and closer to prime snorkeling spots. You’ll also find that you have more flexibility with dining and the overall experience. Both are fantastic options, but if you’re after a more relaxed and quieter atmosphere, I’d go with the Whaler!
