Where to go from Kangding from Nov 3rd for 14 days?
Hi
I am not pressed for time really, it's more the weather I am concerned about
I will be leaving Kangding on the Monday, where shall i go? I love hiking, prefer quieter areas, not touristic but not completely isolated either as I am on my own
Thanks
Leaving Kangding in early November, you need to be mindful that it will already be quite cold at higher altitudes, and snow is possible in many parts of western Sichuan. However, the region offers stunning mountainous landscapes, Tibetan culture, and quieter hiking opportunities if you plan carefully.
Here are some suggestions for a 14-day itinerary, balancing hiking, scenery, and accessibility:
- Tagong Grassland and Tagong Monastery: About 2-3 hours from Kangding, this area offers gentle hikes, Tibetan culture, and open grasslands. The altitude is lower than Kangding, so weather is slightly milder.
- Daocheng / Yading Nature Reserve: A bit further west, Yading is often called “the last Shangri-La.” It offers spectacular trekking routes and quieter trails compared to more popular national parks. In November, snow may cover higher trails, but the scenery is dramatic.
- Litang: Accessible from Kangding, Litang sits at a very high plateau (around 4,000 m). It’s a less touristy Tibetan town with scenic mountain hikes nearby. Be aware of altitude and potential cold.
- Danba / Jiaju Tibetan Village: Known for picturesque Tibetan villages and stone watchtowers. Lower altitude than Kangding, so more comfortable for solo travel in November. Good hiking around villages and nearby hills.
Practical tips:
- Travel by private driver or local buses; some areas are remote and public transport is limited.
- Check road conditions in November; some mountain passes may be closed due to snow.
- Bring warm, layered clothing, proper hiking boots, and a good sleeping bag if staying in guesthouses at higher altitudes.
- Altitude sickness is a concern; acclimatize properly before attempting high-elevation treks.
Sample 14-day route idea:
- Day 1-2: Kangding exploration and acclimatization hikes
- Day 3-4: Tagong Grasslands and Monastery
- Day 5-6: Litang
- Day 7-10: Daocheng / Yading Nature Reserve trekking
- Day 11-12: Danba / Jiaju Tibetan Village hiking
- Day 13-14: Return via Kangding or Chengdu depending on transport options
This itinerary keeps you in relatively quiet areas, avoids major tourist hubs, and balances hiking with cultural exposure. Solo travel is feasible but plan for accommodations in advance, especially in smaller towns.
