Ritz vs Fairmont for end of August

Planning a family trip for 6 nights with two kids (7 and 10) for end of August. Narrowed it down to these two options based on price for one bedroom suite at luxury hotel….four seasons was about double the price. Seeing some mixed reviews for both properties regarding rooms being dated and food. Also not sure if weather is a concern for Ritz this time of year. Appreciate any thoughts!

For a family trip to Maui at the end of August, both the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, and the Fairmont Kea Lani, Wailea, are excellent luxury options, but they offer slightly different experiences that may influence your choice depending on your priorities.

Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua:

  • Located on the northwest coast in Kapalua, known for stunning ocean and sunset views, and access to beautiful beaches and hiking trails.
  • Typically offers a quieter, more resort-like atmosphere, which is great for relaxation and scenic walks.
  • Rooms and suites are spacious but some recent reviews mention that certain areas could feel slightly dated, though renovations are ongoing.
  • Food is high quality, but some families note it can be pricey, and casual dining options are more limited compared to Wailea.
  • August is part of the warmer, drier season, but Kapalua can occasionally see showers in the afternoons — generally not a major concern.
  • Pool and kids’ programs are excellent, making it family-friendly for children aged 7 and 10.

Fairmont Kea Lani, Wailea:

  • Located on the south shore in Wailea, which tends to be sunnier and drier than Kapalua in August.
  • Resort is sprawling with multiple pools, water features, and family-friendly activities.
  • One-bedroom suites offer full kitchens, which is convenient for families and gives more flexibility with meals.
  • Dining is good but some reviews mention inconsistencies; casual options are more plentiful than at Ritz.
  • Beach access is excellent with a long stretch of soft sand, making it easier for kids to play.
  • South Maui weather in late August is generally sunny, warm, and pleasant for beach and pool days.

Other considerations for your choice:

  • Both resorts have excellent family-friendly amenities, but Fairmont may feel more kid-oriented due to multiple pools and activities.
  • Ritz is better for scenic, quieter, and slightly more upscale adult experiences, while still accommodating families.
  • End-of-August weather: Wailea is typically drier and sunnier than Kapalua, reducing the chance of afternoon showers.
  • Proximity: If you plan excursions like Molokini snorkel or Haleakalā sunrise, Wailea is slightly more central to south Maui activities, while Kapalua is more convenient for west/northwest Maui explorations.

In summary, if your priority is sunny weather, easy beach access, and kid-centric resort amenities, Fairmont Kea Lani may be the better fit. If you prefer a quieter, scenic retreat with a luxurious atmosphere and don’t mind occasional rain, the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is excellent. Both are well-suited for families with children, but the vibe and location differ.
