Staying a week in Fort Lauderdale’s North Central Beach over Christmas with a 3.5-year-old and debating car rental vs car-free.
Renting means we install our own car seat once and can easily reach the Galleria, park and playgrounds.
Downside is about $1,000 for holiday rental plus valet-only parking and the stress of driving.
Car-free saves money, and the area is fairly walkable.
Biggest worry is the car seat; my kid is sensitive to unfamiliar seats and I do not want to haul one to parks or shopping.
If car-free, we would bring a lightweight travel seat for the plane and airport transfer, then rely on walking and occasional rides.
What would you recommend?
For a week-long stay in Fort Lauderdale’s North Central Beach area over Christmas with a 3.5-year-old, the decision between renting a car or going car-free largely depends on convenience, cost, and your child’s comfort with car seats. Both options have pros and cons, and it’s worth weighing them carefully.

Recommendation:
Given your child’s sensitivity to car seats, the easiest option for stress-free travel may be renting a car if you plan to do multiple excursions outside walking distance. The upfront cost is high, but having a consistent, familiar car seat and the freedom to drive directly to destinations can make your holiday more relaxing. However, if most of your activities are within walking distance or accessible via occasional rides, going car-free with a lightweight travel seat is feasible and will save money, reducing holiday stress.
Consider a hybrid approach:
This approach balances convenience, cost, and your child’s comfort, letting you enjoy the beach and nearby attractions without the constant hassle of a car.
