Tell you how to play in Jilong Mountain!

Preface

Before getting into the main topic, let’s take a look at a set of data to confirm how I got these 69 Ji Longshan exercises.

According to the China-TravelNote website, a minimum group size of 10 and a maximum of 50 people are required. From February 2017 to July 2018, China-TravelNote organized 112 Jilongshan tours, with a total of 2,742 registered participants and 2,742 paid participants. This does not include private tours.

Furthermore, it's impossible for the same leader to lead a tour every time. Outdoor tours aren't like simply following a guide through a typical scenic spot. Each time a leader is assigned, they need to do their research. This includes introducing the destination, driving routes, itinerary explanations, what activities to plan, identifying and using hiking trails, and safety precautions for caving and rappelling. So, basically, every trip requires this research! So, that's how I learned to do my 69 Jilongshan research trips.

Where is Jilong Mountain?

The Jilongshan Leisure Camping and Development Base in Tonglu, Zhejiang, faces Yaolin Wonderland, one of China's top 40 tourist destinations, across the river. It connects to the Tiandoudilou Scenic Area and the Chuiyuntongtian River. To the northwest lies Yaolin National Forest Park, and to the northeast lies Qinxixiang Valley Scenic Area.

It's 25km from downtown Tonglu, about 80km from downtown Hangzhou, and about 260km from downtown Shanghai. So, a round trip from Hangzhou would only take one day, while Shanghai, Nanjing, and Suzhou could take two days.

Overview of Jilong Mountain

Jilong Mountain boasts a warm and humid subtropical climate, with an average annual temperature of 16.6°C, a daily maximum of 29.3°C, and a minimum of 4.5°C, resulting in warm winters and cool summers. Jilong Mountain boasts a typical karst landscape, rising over 800 meters above sea level. Canyons, streams, and high mountains and plains create a rolling landscape of lush peaks and hills, dotted with bizarre rock formations, numerous caves of various sizes, and numerous underground rivers and springs. The mountain is shrouded in rugged rock formations and shrouded in mist. The scenic area boasts attractions such as the Demon-Suppressing Pillar, the Demon-Suppressing Lock, ancient temple ruins, ancient trails, ancient villages, a sea of clouds and sunrises, Leopard Cliff, City Gate Cave, and Wolong Cave. This area attracts adventure enthusiasts and outdoor clubs from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai.

How to play in Jilong Mountain?

Jilongshan boasts an independent outdoor training base located mid-mountain. Surrounded by verdant mountains and shady trees, scattered farmhouses, and the sounds of birdsong and insects, it's perfect for both outdoor training and team building. Climbing, hiking, game barbecues, bonfire parties, tent camping, cave exploration, local farm dishes, grilled bamboo rice, suckling pig and whole lamb, rappelling, and wilderness survival are all part of the Jilongshan experience. In short, Jilongshan offers a truly enjoyable and immersive outdoor experience, offering everything you could want.

Hiking

The Jilong Mountain one-day hike is a loop. Navigate to Lengwu Mountain in Tonglu County (direct bus to Lengwu Mountain, 37 seats) or Lengwu Village (direct bus to Lengwu Village, 53 seats). The pickup point is Donghua Village in Tonglu (basketball court at the entrance). After disembarking, hike one kilometer to Lengwu Mountain, the starting point of the Jilong Mountain loop. The hike progresses from Lengwu Mountain to Jinniu Cave, Jilong Mountain Campground, Wolong Cave, Leopard Cliff, and finally Donghua Village (end point). The total distance is 8.3 kilometers, with an elevation gain of 23 to 461 feet. It takes approximately 5-6 hours.

The hiking trails are wonderful year-round. In spring, the mountains are ablaze with wildflowers, including azaleas, wisteria, and gardenias, and you can even pick wild strawberries. Summer can be hot, but the trees along the trail provide shade, and the gurgling water in Jinniu Cave provides a refreshing break from the sun. Autumn, with its crisp, cool weather and delightful colors, is a perfect spot for a hike.

Cave exploration

Jilong Mountain boasts four natural caves, each with its own unique character. The darkness and disorientation within these caves are unlike anything most people have ever experienced. You'll need to overcome your fear of the unknown and the discomfort your existing senses create in this dark world. So... do you dare to venture forth?

Less than two kilometers from Lengwu Mountain, you will arrive at Jinniu Cave for your first experience of the thrill of caving. Jinniu Cave has a spacious space, good ventilation, and is quite cool in the summer.

After arriving at the campsite, we'll need to put on our caving gear (headlamp, helmet, gloves, and trekking shoes). Led by our team leader, we'll enter Wolong Cave, winding and spiraling through the cave. Wherever the lights flicker, the stalactites are ever-changing. The faint sound of water echoes from the center of the earth, and looking up, we can even spot the night elves—little bats!

Rock climbing and rappelling

Rappelling on a cliff with a vertical drop of 40 meters, you will truly experience being an "airborne soldier". When the wind whistles past your ears, you will understand what speed and passion in the air are.

Camping and stargazing

Surrounded by mountains, this stunning campground offers a unique experience of camping in the wilderness! The night sky, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, is a breathtaking spectacle. Gazing upon the starry sky, you'll be filled with awe and awe!

Barbecue corruption

The ultimate gourmet food is reserved for the hardworking. Barbecue buffet, work in groups, light a fire, and experience the joy of a picnic!

Bonfire Party

After a satisfying meal, let's go on a whirlwind adventure. Guess what?, acupressure relay, squirrels and trees. Choose China-TravelNote and experience something different.

Questions about Jilongshan

1. Are there any farmhouses on the mountain where I can eat?

There's a farmhouse at the Jilongshan base where you can buy water and drinks. Meals require reservations a day in advance, with a minimum of two tables per table for ten people. You can also order fried rice and sauerkraut and shredded pork noodles after arriving at the farmhouse.

2. Is rappelling safe at Jilong Mountain? Can I rappel without prior experience?

Any outdoor sport carries risks, but we need to improve our safety awareness and operational skills to minimize them. For beginners, under the guidance of a coach, we can overcome our fears, be bold and careful, and adhere to operational regulations to ensure safety. Even beginners can give it a try!

3. Do I need to prepare my own equipment for rappelling at Jilong Mountain?

No, if you sign up for China-TravelNote's route, we will provide you with rock climbing equipment (static rope, safety belt, figure eight ring), helmet, headlamp and gloves.

4. Are there showers at the campsite? Are the tents single or double? Can I stay in a tent?

The campsite is well-equipped with hot showers throughout the day. The tents are double, and you can pay the difference for a single tent. If you don't want to stay in a tent, you can upgrade to a farmhouse.
