On the other hand, we have 9.6 million square kilometers of beautiful land, but we don’t have a national park in the true sense. It’s really unacceptable!
However, this gap is about to be broken. Since the news of the establishment of a national park in Sanjiangyuan was announced in May 2020, it has finally come to fruition after nearly a year!

my country currently has no national parks in the true sense, only 10 national park system pilot projects. Sanjiangyuan is the source area of the Yangtze River, Yellow River and Lancang River, and is the first national park system pilot project approved in my country.

In 2018, it was closed for recuperation due to the strict ecological protection requirements of the nature reserve. Now, with a new name - Sanjiangyuan National Park, it is open to us on a limited basis!

Why did Sanjiangyuan become the first national park?
——Because it is really unique!
Sanjiangyuan National Park is located in the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the third pole of the Earth, with an average altitude of more than 4,000 meters. It has complex and diverse topography and a unique plateau wetland ecosystem in the world. It is an important water conservation area in China and even Asia.
It is also the only region in the world where no large mammals have become extinct since the existence of human civilization. The plateau has concentrated biodiversity and retains the most original habitat and the most complete ecosystem.

In the Sanjiangyuan area, Tibetans still maintain a lifestyle that is dependent on nature. The herders use transhumance to utilize and protect the grasslands. They make a living by nomadism, wear Tibetan robes, and use cow dung as fuel. As the seasons change, yak tents will bloom on the grasslands in summer.
Isn't the core area of the nature reserve off-limits to anyone? Why is it being opened now?
There is an unchangeable fact: the areas with the richest biodiversity and the most strictly protected are often the areas where the poorest ethnic minorities have traditionally lived. It seems difficult to have both "green waters and green mountains" and "gold and silver mountains" in these areas.
Madoi County, Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province is the source of the Yellow River. It is also the hometown and main activity area of the legendary Tibetan King Gesar. In the past decade, it has been a Ramsar International Important Wetland, a National Nature Reserve, a National Scenic Area, a National Geopark, a National 5A Scenic Area, and a National Water Conservancy Scenic Area.
However, protecting water sources and developing local traditional animal husbandry are contradictory, and herders have not benefited from the development of the tertiary industry. They are the masters and protectors of this area and have become the targets of poverty alleviation.
This is the significance of the limited opening of Sanjiangyuan National Park. The limited ecological capacity determines that it can only receive a limited number of visitors each year.

After the establishment of the national park, many young people returned to the local area to become national park ecological rangers. They cleaned up garbage, managed black soil beaches, set up artificial bird nests, and helped black-necked cranes affected by climate change to raise their chicks smoothly. After carrying out ecological experience projects, they also shouldered the task of introducing the national park to the outside world. The local nomadic community has never received foreign visitors. They serve the best beef and mutton with the enthusiasm of hospitality to brothers from all over the world, and observe outsiders from the city with the same curiosity.
For each batch of visitors to the national park, food, accommodation and transportation services are provided by local Tibetan herdsmen in collaboration with the Yunxiang Nature science tour guide. Under the guidance of the science tour guide, the visitors appreciate all living things, respect local ethnic culture, and give back to their Tibetan compatriots who have lived on this sacred mountain and holy lake for generations through the Yunxiang Nature payment experience activities.
Currently, 60%-70% of the operating income of Yunxiang Nature's Yellow River Source Ecological Experience Activity is transferred to local communities participating in the national park visitor reception services.
The Yellow River source area is home to stunning plateau lakes, such as Zhaling Lake and Eling Lake. We will share this 20,000 square kilometers of wild nature with a team from the Global Biodiversity Treasure House. Led by a scientific leader, we will hike in the wild environment, observe wildlife at a suitable distance, and experience the most authentic source of the Yellow River.
The source of the Yellow River is the area with the highest visibility of wild animals in China. It is an internationally important wetland and a migratory bird supply station. During this trip, your scientific leader will vividly explain ecological knowledge to you throughout the trip. You will observe animals on the plateau, such as Tibetan antelopes, Tibetan wild donkeys, and blue sheep, by car. In areas where carnivores such as snow leopards, brown bears, and wolves pass, you will personally place infrared cameras and observe the breeding of migratory waterfowl such as bar-headed geese, ruddy shelducks, black-necked cranes, etc.
