Highway 1 | Daxi Reservoir and Tianmu Lake run through it, with continuous ups and downs

Day 1 Shanghai → Cycling Start → Daxi Reservoir → Tianmu Lake → Shanghai

07:00

Everyone gathers at the designated address of China-TravelNote and signs in.

We set off on time at 7:15. The team leader introduced the itinerary and the team members introduced themselves. There was laughter and joy all the way.

10:30

Go to the gathering point, choose your bike, and have a group briefing on the itinerary and cycling precautions. After warming up, set off together.

This cycling route centered around Liyang Highway No. 1, the internet-famous "Rainbow Highway." Its center is divided by three lines of orange, yellow, and blue, like a colorful ribbon stretched across a tranquil landscape. The nearly 80-kilometer ride only scratches the surface. The route connects several major scenic spots and famous towns in Liyang, showcasing its vibrant culture, economy, and scenery.

11:30

We arrived at the lunch supply point, where everyone can share a meal or order some farm-style dishes, and drink a bowl of milky fish head soup. Liyang has three whites: white tea, white celery, and fish head soup, and two blacks: black rice and wild mushrooms (xùn). This will help us to recharge our batteries for the afternoon windbreak.

2:00 PM

We circled Tianmu Lake, winding through the mountains and checking in at the popular Jingzhan Bridge. There were no major slopes along the way, only ups and downs. We cycled by the lake, checked in for photos, or simply rode away from the worries of the workday.

3:30 PM

We have ridden to the vicinity of the Daxi Reservoir, which the locals call "Little Erhai Lake". When we arrived at the lakeside, the view suddenly opened up. The blue sky, clear water and mountains were a long-lost scenery. We walked and stopped along the shore, feeling the mountain breeze, and felt very comfortable.

4:45 PM

Arrived at the end of the ride, stretched, and prepared to get on the bus back to Shanghai

9:00 PM

Arrived in Shanghai, kissed goodbye with tears

Driving time: 3.5 hours

Hiking: Cycling about 80km, cumulative climbing 400m

1. Why didn’t I receive a text message notification after registering?

2. What if it rains during the event?

2-3 days before the event, we will decide whether the event will proceed as scheduled based on the weather forecast and route conditions. Please pay attention to our notifications. Most activities can proceed as usual even if there is light rain. There is still fun to be had on rainy days. If heavy rain is forecast, the event will be cancelled and a full refund will be given to everyone.

3. Is this route crowded?

Most of our routes are natural and niche, with relatively small traffic. Of course, it also depends on the registration situation for each period. Generally, ordinary models are 37-seat buses, and a few large models are 53-seat. Each car has a certain proportion of tour leaders to ensure the quality of the event.

Tianmu Lake, located eight kilometers south of Liyang City, Changzhou, is named after the remnants of Tianmu Mountain. It is a deep lake (reservoir) narrow from east to west and long from north to south, with a depth of approximately 4-5 meters in the southern part and 10-14 meters in the northern part. Numerous historical and cultural sites remain, including Wuyuan Mountain, named after Wu Zixu, a Chu native from the Spring and Autumn Period; the study platform of the great Eastern Han Dynasty writer Cai Yong; Taibai Tower; Baoen Zen Temple; and the former site of Longxing Temple, a renowned Tang Dynasty temple. The Tianmu Lake area is rich in products, including Shahe Guiming green tea, oolong tea, pearl chestnuts, Guiyuan chestnuts, and clay pot fish heads. Known as the "Pearl of Jiangnan" and a "Green Wonderland," the Tianmu Lake area encompasses a 300-square-kilometer ecological reserve, home to the Shahe and Daxi reservoirs. It is one of the first ecological tourism demonstration zones in Jiangsu Province.
