MacLehose Trail | 5-Day Highlights (4 Sections) / 7-Day Full Trail (10 Sections)

Day 1: All over the country → → Shenzhen (★Meeting day)

All day

Today is the all-day gathering day. Tourists from all over the country are gathering in Shenzhen. Please go to the gathering hotel to check in.

If you have more time, you can go to Window of the World, OCT, Shenzhen Bay Seaside Park on your own.

Friends who love leisure can choose to have morning tea or evening tea in a teahouse, where there are dozens or even hundreds of dim sum, such as shrimp dumplings, salty rice dumplings, fish porridge, rice noodles, and various side dishes, etc., which are very rich.

Please remember to stay safe during free time!

A pre-trip meeting will be held at approximately 21:00 in the evening (the time of the pre-trip meeting will be notified in the group’s departure notice) to introduce relevant matters of this event.

Note: This trip is mainly in Hong Kong, please prepare your Hong Kong and Macau Pass and apply for visa in advance

Day 2 Shenzhen Port → Port → Mai Trail starting point → Po Pin Chau → Hike 1-2 sections → Ham Tin Bay Campsite

All day

After breakfast, we will gather and depart, cross the border into Hong Kong, and take a bus to the starting point of the MacLehose Trail - Pak Tam Chung (luggage boxes will be delivered to the hotel by the staff, so you can just pack light and take your camping gear with you for the hike).

Today we will hike part of the first section of the MacLehose Trail, Po Pin Chau, and the first half of the second section. The roads will mainly be tractor roads and paved mountain trails.

First, we'll pass High Island Reservoir, Hong Kong's largest reservoir. Its blue waters radiate a captivating hue in the sunlight. Then, we'll visit Po Pin Chau, the landmark of the Geopark. We'll pass by Long Ke Wan, with its clear waters and fine sands, a paradise-like setting, and the emerald green of Sai Wan Campground.

Finally, we arrived at Ham Tin Bay Campground. This is one of the most comfortable campgrounds on the MacLehose Trail. While enjoying the sea view, there are toilets and running water for a quick shower or a towel-towel wash.

Note: If you are unable to participate in the event due to personal reasons, no refund will be provided

Driving time: about 1.5 hours

Hiking: about 12km, with a total ascent of 600m, and takes about 6 hours. The road is a mature hiking trail with good conditions.

Note: There is a shower area at the camping site (at your own expense: HK$40 per shower, limited to 15 minutes).
Please do not bring suitcases to camping, and you cannot drag luggage along the way.

Day 3 Ham Tin Bay Campsite → MacLehose Trail Section 2-3 → Shui Lang Wo → City Hotel

All day

Wake up to the sound of waves in the morning, have breakfast according to the time arranged by the leader, pack up the tent and set off.

Continue along Section 2, considered the highlight of the MacLehose Trail for its stunning scenery. Section 3, crossing several high mountains in Sai Kung West, offers views of Chek Keng Hau, Sai Kung Hoi, Tsam Chuk Wan, Kei Leng Ha Hoi, and the majestic Snake Peak and Ma On Shan in the distance.

Today you only need to walk to the end of the third section. The distance is short and the walk is relatively easy. After arriving at the end, take public transportation back to the city and check into the hotel.

After checking in at the hotel, the tourists are free to make dinner plans and return to the hotel as early as possible to wash up and go to bed, so as to be fully prepared for tomorrow's difficult hiking.

Warm reminder: Since the walking speed varies, to avoid long waits, we have arranged for the tour leader to guide everyone to take public transportation back to the city hotel at the end of the hike. Hong Kong's public transportation is very developed, and we have prepared Octopus cards for everyone. Thank you for your understanding!

Hiking: about 15km, cumulative climbing 840m, about 6 hours

Day 4 City Hotel → MacLehose Trail Section 4 → City Hotel

All day

Today we have to complete section 4, which is the most difficult section of the entire MacLehose Trail.

After a 40-minute ride to the starting point for a warm-up, we continued our ascent along the mountain path and stone steps to the southern ridge of Ma On Shan, where the path then flattens out, winding through the hills. We reached Jiuqushan, where we could see the cityscape and bay of Hong Kong. The tour then continued downhill to the Lion Pavilion, where our tour leader led us down the mountain and back to our hotel.

Upon returning to the Hong Kong hotel, you can leave the team early and return on your own, or continue to stay at the hotel and check out on your own one day later.

Kind tips:

As the walking speed varies, to avoid long waits, we have arranged for the tour leader to guide everyone to take public transportation back to the city hotel at the end of the hike. Hong Kong's public transportation is very developed, and we have prepared Octopus cards for everyone. Thank you for your understanding!

We expect to arrive at the hike's destination between 3-4 pm that day. If you plan to return on the same day, we recommend booking a train or flight to Hong Kong after 8:00 pm. We recommend flights to Shenzhen Airport after 9:30 pm.

Please note this when registering so that the price difference for accommodation on that day can be refunded. If you withdraw at a later date, the price difference will not be refunded.

Hiking: about 16km, cumulative climbing 850m, about 6 hours
