Mount Everest, Summit of the Himalayas | Classic Mount Everest Holy Elephant Gate 6-Day Tour

Day 1: Various locations → → Lhasa (★Lhasa gathering day) (3650m)

All day

Today, tourists from all over the country will arrive in Lhasa according to their own transportation options and check into their hotels. After checking in, it's recommended to rest and acclimate to the plateau before preparing for the upcoming trip. Tourists in good health can explore Barkhor Street, but it's best to take it slow on the plateau. If you feel unwell, please contact your tour leader and guide immediately for assistance.

Kind tips

Don't get too excited when you first arrive in Lhasa! On your arrival day, avoid showering. Drink plenty of water, eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, eat light meals (only until you're 80% full), and stay up late (going to bed early will cause you to wake up in the middle of the night and have trouble falling asleep). Avoid smoking and drinking. A positive mental state is the key to overcoming altitude sickness. Numerous studies have shown that maintaining an open-minded and optimistic attitude can alleviate the physical discomfort caused by altitude sickness.

Day 2 Lhasa (3650m) → Yamdrok Lake (4441m) → Karola Glacier (5020m) → Shigatse (3836m)

All day

In the morning, we will depart from Lhasa and drive along the airport highway to Qushui. Along the way, we will enjoy the scenery of the Lhasa River and the Yarlung Zangbo River. We will cross the Gangbala Snow Mountain at an altitude of 4,900 meters and arrive at the Gangbala Pass Observation Deck of Yamdrok Lake (tour time is about 20 minutes). This is where you can see the panoramic view of Yamdrok Lake. From the Gangbala Pass Observation Deck, we will drive along the edge of Yamdrok Lake to the Yamdrok Lake Road Observation Deck (tour time is about 20 minutes). Here, you can see Yamdrok Lake up close.

After exiting Yamdrok Lake, passing through Langgarzi County, you'll arrive at the Karola Glacier (a 20-minute visit). One of Tibet's three largest continental glaciers, it forms the eastern source of the Nianchu River. Thanks to filming locations for films like "Red River Valley," "The Battle of Gyantse," and "The Ballad of Clouds and Water," the Karola Glacier has become incredibly famous. Many travelers flock here to admire the glacier's majesty and marvel at the charm of nature.

Stay in a standard room at a hotel in Shigatse city at night

Driving distance: 300 kilometers

Note: When taking photos, please pay attention to the Tibetans around you. If you want to take photos with yaks and Tibetan mastiffs, please negotiate the price with the Tibetans first.

Day 3 Shigatse (3836m) → Everest Base Camp (5200m) → Basong Village (4270m)

All day

We got up early and set off from Shigatse. We first applied for border passes for the tourists who did not have them, and then headed to the long-awaited [Mount Everest National Nature Reserve].

Passing through Lhazi, we'll first reach the Gawu La Pass. With luck, you can see four snow-capped peaks over 8,000 meters: Makalu (8,463 meters), Lhotse (8,516 meters), Everest (8,844 meters), and Cho Oyu (8,201 meters). From here, the snow-capped peaks take in the view, and life itself stands naked before the majestic power of the universe. We'll then disembark at Everest Base Camp and visit Rongbuk Monastery on our own (optional, not included). Then, we'll admire the majestic splendor of Mount Everest before departing for a stay in a village homestay near Everest Base Camp.

Kind tips:

Clothing: Due to the high altitude, please bring enough warm clothes to prevent sudden changes in weather. A three-piece suit and a light down jacket or sweater are recommended.

Meals: Simple food such as fried rice or noodles can be purchased in the reserve. It is recommended to bring some snacks or instant noodles.

Driving distance: 340km

Day 4 Basong Village (4270m) → Tashilhunpo Monastery → Shigatse (3836m)

All day

At dawn, at the summit of the Earth, we gaze up at Mount Everest, its summit perpetually capped with snow. In the distance, glaciers dangle, and the silvery peaks tower, creating a sacred spectacle. You'll feel the desolation of life, conquered by the silence of humankind, becoming insignificant yet luminous in the pureness of the universe. After our tour, we return to Shigatse, leaving behind a fond memory of Mount Everest.

After arriving in Shigatse, we will first visit the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the residence of successive Panchen Lamas. Accompanied by the sincere explanations of the staff, we will visit the Jampa Buddha Hall, the mausoleum of the 10th Panchen Lama, the mausoleum of the 4th Panchen Lama, the mausoleum of the 5th to 9th Panchen Lamas, the Tsokchen Hall, etc.

Tashilhunpo Monastery, also known as the "Auspicious Xumi Temple," has a full name of "Tashlhunpo Baiji Deqin Qutang Jiele Nanba Jiewalin," meaning "Auspicious Xumi gathers blessings from all directions." It is a temple in Shigatse, Tibet, and the seat of successive Panchen Lamas since the fourth generation. Located on the slopes of Niseri Mountain west of Shigatse, the temple is a major tourist attraction in western Tibet. Together with the "three major monasteries" of Lhasa—Ganden Monastery, Sera Monastery, and Drepung Monastery—it is considered one of the "Four Great Monasteries" of the Gelugpa sect.

After the tour, we went to Shigatse Hotel to check in.

Driving distance: 340km

Day 5 Shigatse (3836m) → Selincuo → Bange

All day

After breakfast at the hotel, we will depart for Selintso, the largest lake in Tibet and the second largest saltwater lake in China, which is also the famous Black-necked Crane Breeding Nature Reserve.

The beautiful scenery along the way can relieve your journey fatigue, and you will arrive in Bangor before you know it.

Stay in Bangor tonight

Driving distance: 480 kilometers

Day 6 Bange → Holy Elephant Gate → Nagenla Pass → Lhasa Civil Aviation Administration (3650m)

All day

Depart in the morning and drive along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, enjoying the scenery of the northern Tibetan grasslands and pastures, and arrive at the Namtso Holy Elephant Tianmen Scenic Area.

This is the famous Chaduo Nanka Island on the north shore of Namtso Lake. From a distance, the shoreline of Namtso Lake forms two arcs, with a huge rock standing out in the middle. Up close, it looks like an elephant. Namtso Lake has a unique beauty from this angle, and few tour groups visit. After our tour, we left the scenic area, with Nyainqentanglha Mountain just to the right of the car window.

[Special reminder] Shengxiang Tianmen Scenic Area is currently in the individual reservation state. If it is not possible to reserve Shengxiang Tianmen Scenic Area for all members, we will go to Namtso [Zaxi Peninsula] Scenic Area

In the evening, we returned to the holy city of Lhasa near the Civil Aviation Administration and ended the event. Everyone said goodbye with emotion.

Note: After returning to Lhasa, we will disband near the Civil Aviation Administration.

What should we pay attention to on the plateau?

Psychological preparation: You should be relatively relaxed emotionally and not be overly nervous or excited. For healthy people, it is completely possible to quickly adapt to the altitude of 3,000 to 4,000 meters in places like Lhasa. There is no need to be afraid of the plateau and altitude sickness.
In addition, you can take "Rhodiola rosea" and other medications to prevent altitude sickness one week before entering Tibet. Team members who usually exercise a lot should reduce or stop exercise one week in advance.
If you still have questions about altitude sickness, you can also read the altitude sickness tips post .

People with heart disease and high blood pressure should not travel to Tibet. Older people are advised to have a physical examination before traveling to the plateau.
