Kaixuan Road Elevator

The Kaixuan Road Elevator, built by the post-80s generation, is China's first urban passenger elevator. Here we will explore the secrets of the lower half of the city.

【Donghua Temple】

We have arrived at the world of the lower half of the city by going down several floors of streets. We passed by the oldest wooden building in Chongqing’s main urban area - the Donghua Temple Sutra Library in Yuzhong District. Although it has been repaired but not open to the public, it does not affect our chatting here.

【Mysterious Sky Bridge】

After climbing a slope and crossing a bumpy road, where will a mysterious sky bridge lead us?

【White Elephant Residence】

Baixiangju is shaped like a Rubik's Cube and is well-connected. Its three exits lead to three different streets: Binjiang Road on the first floor, Baixiang Street on the 10th floor, and Jiefang East Road on the 15th floor. Many movies have been filmed here, making it a popular check-in spot.

【Yangtze River Cableway Viewing Check-in】

Stay away from the check-in crowds and take a photo with the cable car from a low vantage point. If you have time, we will take you to the cable car entrance for a journey across the Yangtze River.

Q: What should I bring to the event?

A: Although it is a leisure city walk, Chongqing is a mountain city with sloping roads. We recommend that tourists wear comfortable shoes, bring cameras, mobile phones and wallets, wear sunscreen in summer, bring mosquito repellent, and check the weather forecast to consider whether to bring an umbrella.

Q: Is it possible to travel on rainy days?

Answer: Chongqing is more charming on rainy days, and the night view is more beautiful. Remember to bring an umbrella.

Q: Is the line strong?

Answer: The intensity is average, mainly traveling on urban roads and steps.

The Kaixuan Road Elevator was the first indoor elevator used for urban public transportation in China. Construction began in January 1985 and it was completed and put into operation in February 1986. It is one of Chongqing's oldest elevators and the first urban passenger elevator in China. In 1990, the popular CCTV program "Zhengda Variety Show" asked, "What is the purpose of this building?" This puzzle puzzled the well-informed guests and made the Kaixuan Road Elevator a must-see attraction for visitors to Chongqing. Soon, its image appeared on Chongqing matchboxes, becoming a city landmark.

The Donghua Temple Sutra Library, a Taoist temple dating back to the Yuan Dynasty, is an ancient wooden structure in Chongqing's main city. Located at 64 Kaixuan Road in Chongqing's Yuzhong District, according to the "Chongqing Yuzhong District Cultural and Historical Materials," the original main hall, Donghua Temple, was built during the Yuan Dynasty, during the reign of Emperor Kublai Khan. It once flourished, attracting a constant stream of devout believers. Following the fall of the Yuan Dynasty, the temple suffered severe damage from war. During the Zhengde reign of the Ming Dynasty, a major renovation was undertaken, not only restoring the temple but also expanding it. After becoming a municipality directly under the central government, the Chongqing Municipal People's Government designated it as one of the first batch of municipal cultural relics protection sites.

In 1929, as Chongqing was developing rapidly, a 1.2-hectare park was built on Jiefangbei Park Road, one of the main thoroughfares between the upper and lower parts of the city. This park, now known as People's Park, was renamed "Zhongshan Park" during the Anti-Japanese War. Later, during the Chongqing bombing, most of the park's facilities were destroyed. Restoration was not completed until after the victory of the war. It houses the Sichuan Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, the Chongqing Firefighters Memorial, and the Jiusan Society Founding Site Monument. It is now a popular spot for residents to relax and stroll.
