Compared to Hangzhou's West Lake, Huizhou's West Lake boasts a distinctly Lingnan style and is known as the city's heart. Comprising the "Five Lakes, Six Bridges, and Eight Scenic Spots," Pinghu Lake is the largest of the lakes, home to most of the city's key attractions. Along the embankment to the north, visitors can visit Fengzhu Garden, where the lotus blossoms are beautiful in summer. North of Pinghu Lake, Xiajiao East Road and Xiajiao Middle Road are Huizhou's oldest residential areas, lushly shaded by trees and popular with local residents.

Gaobang Mountain, also known as Huizhou's White Cloud Mountain, serves as the green lung of Huicheng District. It is an urban forest park in Huicheng District, located within the Honghua Lake and West Lake Scenic Area. It is the highest mountain north of the Honghua Lake Scenic Area, with its back to the mountain and its front to the lake, offering distant views of Luoshan Mountain and Xiaoe Lake. The natural beauty of these two mountains and three lakes contributes to Gaobang Mountain's scenic value. In ancient times, during the era of the imperial examinations, when communication was limited, it took many days for Huizhou students to receive the results of their examinations in Beijing. The county residents, eager to wait, gathered outside the Pinghu Gate of West Lake on the day of the imperial examination announcement, gazing westward at the mountain for auspicious clouds. If such clouds appeared and drifted to the cliffs of the mountain, it signified that a student from Huizhou would pass the imperial examination. This is why a Qing Dynasty poem evoked the line: "Peaks open the green walls, and half the sky is visible." This mountain is also known as Guabang Mountain. Gaobang Mountain symbolizes the hope that Huizhou students will be admitted to the imperial examinations.

Over 900 years ago, Su Dongpo, exiled to Huizhou, built a new residence on Baihe Peak to spend his final years. Later, Su Dongpo was exiled to Hainan, and several years later, Baihe Peak became the Dongpo Temple.
