A Day in Northern Jiangsu, Kenya, and Yancheng | Birdwatching at Tiaozini and Elk Hunting at the Elk Park

Day 1 Suzhou → Yancheng → Suzhou

07:00

Meeting point 1: 07:00-07:10, intersection of Jintang Street and Zongguantang Road (near Exit 6 of Pinghe Road Station on Metro Line 2. Self-driving cars can park at Yaosheng Building, capped at 20 yuan/day)

The tour leader on the bus led everyone to interact and laugh all the way to the destination.

We gathered and set off, arriving at our destination with laughter and joy all the way.

10:40

Arrive at [Tiaozini], a scenic spot located on the coast of Dongtai, Yancheng. It is named after its strip-shaped harbor. It is the first World Natural Heritage Site in Jiangsu and the fourteenth in China, filling the gap in China's coastal wetland World Natural Heritage.

It has a total area of 600 square kilometers, of which the scenic area covers 10.77 square kilometers. It has vast tidal flats and wetlands. It is the core area of the Yellow (Bohai) Sea migratory bird habitat and a vital node on the East Asia-Australasia Flyway.

Tiaozini is a "bird paradise." Every year, millions of migratory birds flock here from faraway lands. As of 2024, the number of bird species recorded in Tiaozini has increased to 414.

The abundant benthic biodiversity and healthy ecosystem here provide ample food and habitat for migratory birds. When the tide recedes, the birds scatter along the beach to feed, retreating to the inner side of the levee at high tide to rest. The scenic area's birdwatching platform, equipped with high-powered binoculars, allows visitors to clearly observe geese, ducks, black-faced spoonbills, white spoonbills, and other birds leisurely strolling, foraging, and resting.

Special reminder: Tourists can bring their own binoculars or telephoto lenses for bird watching, which will provide a better experience.

12:00

Then we arrived at Longgang Town, which is located in the southeast of Dongtai City, Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, like a shining pearl on the coast of the Yellow Sea.

It has an 85-kilometer winding coastline. Its unique geographical location enables it to have three major ecological environment systems: ocean, wetland, and forest. It has three dazzling ecological "golden business cards" of plain forest, coastal wetland, and migratory bird paradise, and has a very profound ecological heritage.

In Longgang Town, seafood is the undisputed star of the culinary scene. Every bite of freshness here seems to carry the vigorous vitality of the sea. Everyone can freely find food here and have lunch.

2:30 PM

Then we arrived at the Chinese Elk Park. (Tickets are not included, please check this option when placing your order)

Located on Milu Avenue in Dafeng District, Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, the Chinese Elk Park is the world's only national 5A-level tourist attraction dedicated to wetland ecology and elk conservation. It boasts three world records: the largest elk reserve, the largest elk population, and the richest elk gene pool. The park is said to have over 8,000 elk.

To enter the scenic area, you need to take a scenic sightseeing bus for sightseeing (some areas cannot be visited by walking)

Wildlife of elk: Nearly 8,000 elk roam freely across the wetland grasslands. Males, with their forked antlers, patrol their territory, while females and their fawns graze on the grass. If you're lucky, you might even witness the fierce battle between the kings of elk.

Feeding and Interaction: Buy a basket of carrots at the Deer Observation Platform and feel the elk's moist tongue curl across your palm. They're as docile as your neighborhood pet, yet possess a playful, adorable aura of "four unlike" creatures (horns like a deer, heads like a horse, tails like a donkey, hooves like a cow).

Wetland ecological Easter eggs: The park is home to "indigenous residents" such as red-crowned cranes and egrets, which often appear in the same frame with elk, forming a natural picture of "cranes and deer in spring". Any photo taken is a model of harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

4:30 PM

Return to Suzhou.

8:30 PM

It is expected that we will return to the departure point in Suzhou around 20:30, and everyone will wave goodbye!

Driving time: about 3 hours

Notes: 1. The listed times are for reference only. The specific tour schedule and order are subject to actual arrangements. Depending on traffic conditions or tides, you may visit the Tiaozini Scenic Area before lunch in Longgang Town. Please be aware of this. 2. There is little shade at the Tiaozini beach, so please be aware of the sun and sun. 3. Tides are the driving force behind birdwatching at Tiaozini: low tide exposes the mudflats, revealing benthic organisms and allowing migratory birds to disperse and feed. High tide floods the mudflats, allowing birds to gather at the 720-meter high point. This is prime birdwatching season. Each perspective has its advantages and disadvantages, so please be open to the possibilities. 4. Tourists are encouraged to bring their own binoculars or telephoto lenses for birdwatching and photography.

The nickname "Kenya of Northern Jiangsu" associated with Yancheng isn't a casual gimmick, but a precise interpretation of the city's ecological uniqueness. This stretch of land on the Yellow Sea coast, with three core characteristics, emulates the wildness and vitality of Kenya in Africa, making it a rare "nature observation paradise" in East China.
1. A "Wildlife Carnival" Rivaling the East African Grasslands:
Kenya is renowned for its spectacular grasslands, featuring wildebeest migrations and lions hunting. Yancheng, on its wetlands and mudflats, offers a different kind of feast of life. At the Chinese Elk Park, 8,000 elk roam freely across the grasslands, their massive antlers gleaming in the sun. The annual spring "Deer King Showdown" rivals the lion showdowns of Africa. Tiaozini Wetland, known as a "bird migration airport," welcomes millions of migratory birds annually. The flocks of rare birds, such as spoon-billed sandpipers and red-crowned cranes, foraging here rival Kenya's Flamingo Lake.
Even more exciting
Second, a World Heritage-level "Ecological and Geomorphological Museum."
Kenya's Great Rift Valley has created a diverse landscape, and Yancheng's wetland ecosystem is equally a "miracle of the earth." The intertidal mudflats of Tiaozini change daily with the tides. The "fingerprints of the earth" and "tidal forests" revealed at low tide resemble abstract paintings hand-painted by nature. The "green corridors" of metasequoia and pond cypress in the coastal shelterbelts, like Kenya's acacia forests, are both scenic landmarks and wildlife sanctuaries.
The pristine nature and diversity of this
Third, the "wild balance" of human and nature .
Just as the Maasai people of Kenya coexist with wildlife on the grasslands, the fishermen of Yancheng share a similarly wise approach to nature. Fishermen in Longgang Town have abandoned overfishing in favor of protecting the mudflat ecosystem, their "sea-hunting" labor intertwines with the foraging of migratory birds in a fascinating interplay of time and space. Huangshagang Fishing Port's "fresh food direct supply" model maintains a sustainable connection between human dining and the bounty of the ocean. This philosophy of "taking in moderation" echoes the ecological ethics of the Kenyan grasslands.
As you drive along Yancheng's highways, wild rabbits might dart out of the Metasequoia forests flanking your car window, or egrets might startle from the red carpet of saltwort. This experience of "driving through the scenery, animals roaming within the painting" embodies the essence of a Kenyan safari—here, nature is never kept in captivity, but coexists with humans in its natural state.
From grasslands teeming with elk to mudflats teeming with birds, from the awe-inspiring pristine landscapes to the harmony between man and nature, Yancheng, with its unique ecological endowment, has replicated the wild charm of Kenya on the northern Jiangsu plains. Without the intense heat and remoteness of Africa, it possesses the same moving poetry of life, a true footnote to the title "Kenya of Northern Jiangsu."
