Tiantai: A Treasure Town | Guoqing Temple, the ancestral home of the Tiantai Sect, and Zhongshan Road: Explore the Ancient World

Day 1 Ningbo → Tiantai → Ningbo

07:00

Meet at the south gate of Youngor Stadium to sign in and get on the bus

10:30

Depart for Tiantai County.

This old county town road, preserved by time and overlooked by tourists, rarely attracts visitors to Tiantai's old street, Zhongshan Road. For those who enjoy exploring old streets, this is a must-see! This street bears traces of various dynasties. Along Zhongshan East Road, you'll find ancient buildings like Guanyin Hall, Miaohua Tower, and ancestral halls. CW recommends the following route: Yingtai ➡️ Chen Clan Ancestral Hall ➡️ Guanyin Hall ➡️ Miaohua Tower Residential Complex ➡️ Confucius Temple ➡️ Yongqing Street ➡️ General Temple ➡️ Wumen Liuxu. The entire itinerary takes approximately two hours, with free time for lunch. For those who prefer a more lively atmosphere, head to the tranquil and bustling Zhexi Old Street, a replica of the ancient city.

13:00

Drive to Guoqing Temple. Construction began in 598 AD, the 18th year of the Sui Dynasty's Kaihuang reign. Originally named Tiantai Temple, it was later renamed Guoqing Temple, inspired by the saying "If the temple is completed, the country will be peaceful." In 598 AD, Prince Yang Guang of Jin built the Bao'en Pagoda to honor Master Zhizhe for receiving the Bodhisattva precepts. The six-sided, nine-story pagoda lacks the typical pointed capital, except for intricately carved Buddha statues on the brick walls. Suggested Tour Route: Parking Lot - Observation Deck (viewing rice paddies and the Sui Dynasty pagoda from a distance) - Seven Buddha Pagoda - Hanshi Pavilion - Teaching and Observation General - Double Streams Returning - Here the Water Flows West - Sui Dynasty Temple - Mountain Gate - Maitreya Hall - Yuhua Hall - Main Hall - Plum Pavilion - Dharma Milk Pavilion - Medicine Buddha Hall - Guanyin Hall - Sino-Korean Tiantai Sect Patriarch Memorial Hall - Sutra Pillar - Three Sages Hall - Miaofa Hall - Cultural Relics Room - Arhat Hall - Three Saints Hall - Anyang Hall - Single-Brushed Goose-Character Stele - Jialan Hall - Fish Joy Kingdom - Exit. It takes about 2-2.5 hours.
