Getting to the Nakadake Crater of Mount Aso from JR Aso Station is quite convenient using public transportation. First, you need to take bus number 8 from JR Aso Station to Mount Aso. The bus ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes, and you can get off at the Asosanjo stop to reach the vicinity of the summit. Note that access to the crater may be restricted depending on operational conditions, so it's advisable to check in advance. Also, keep in mind that access may be limited due to weather or volcanic activity.
Upon arriving at the Nakadake Crater of Mount Aso, the sight is truly overwhelming. In the serene natural landscape of Japan, this place allows you to directly feel the vibrant energy of the volcano, evoking a sense of awe towards nature. Particularly, the sulfur gas rising from the crater and the undulating blue-green volcanic lake give an otherworldly impression. Confronting the immense power of nature, which is rarely encountered in daily life, provides a moment to deeply reflect on the relationship between nature and humanity.
While observing the crater, you can have a variety of sensory experiences. The faint smell of sulfur, the sound of the wind around the volcano, and the occasional tremors of the ground offer moments that go beyond mere visual experiences. As an active volcano, Mount Aso can resume volcanic activity at any time, which strongly conveys the feeling that the earth is alive.
