City Pillar Shrine, Bangkok

The City Pillar Shrine of Bangkok
This shrine was built at the same time as the establishment of Rattanakosin as the capital city in the reign of King Rama I in 2325. The city pillar was made of Chaipruk wood, with sandalwood on the outside. There was a lotus bud-shaped apex on the pillar, which was lacquered and gilded. The apex was in the shape of a lotus bud. Inside was a space for the city's horoscope.
In the reign of King Rama IV, the King ordered the excavation of the original city pillar and the construction of a new one. The city's horoscope was placed in the top of the pillar in the shape of a pavilion. The old and new city pillars were invited to be enshrined in the newly built city pillar building, which had a prang spire made of brick and plastered with white cement.
The Guardian Deities Shrine is the residence of the five guardian deities: Phra Suea Mueang, Phra Song Mueang, Phra Kan Chai Si, Chao Chet Khup, and Chao Hok Long.
