#InsomniaInExhibition
When a painting is not just an image on a canvas, but an infiltration of time, light, and materials, "Painting as Event Materiality and Light in the Practice of Xie Fan" is an exhibition that will take us to explore the materiality and light in the process of Xie Fan's work.
Xie Fan's work is rooted in the understanding of infiltration, a concept deeply rooted in Eastern painting, especially the sentence that "energy penetrates through paper", which becomes the starting point for questioning the painting: Can we really control it? Or is it a negotiation between the artist, the material, and the natural environment?
This exhibition is like a space for experimentation, revealing, and transitioning, through the placement of works in places where light and shadow can really move. All of this conveys the instability of images, the uncertainty of objects, and the ephemerality of what is called "art".
The artist uses sponges and terracotta as the main materials of his work, with many small paintings on terracotta and large paintings on sponges arranged along the stairwell of an old building leading to the third floor. The highlight of the work is the free permeability of the pigments through the surface, using red soil from Khao Yai mixed with local plants. Before letting the natural light and shadows of the day overlap, turning it into a living and never-ending painting.
This exhibition invites us to change the way we perceive and interact with art. We will not walk to see paintings hanging on the wall, but we must follow “time” and “light” that change at different times of the day to observe the subtle changes in shadows, colors, and textures.
One of the charms of this exhibition is the exhibition inside an old building, the space of Bangkok Kunsthalle, where natural light shines through all day. Therefore, the place is not just a backdrop, but also an important element of this work.
Although the exhibition has ended, Insomnia.Scene has collected the atmosphere and images of the work to share with friends to experience the charm of “living” art and invite us to reconsider the meaning of image creation, materials, and time.
