Details at the Forbidden Palace

You can easily spend a whole day at the Palace Museum, once called the Forbidden city. This expansive complex was the home to various emperors of China, some of whom never went beyond its walls.

We found that it was easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer size of the site, wanting to see everything we could even on a cold and drizzly day. What was most rewarding however was slowing down and looking at the details. The symmetry in the painting and beams, the artistry in even the door hinges. All these details hint at the opulence that once was.
