Open since 1922, Hyotan Onsen is one of Beppu’s top hot spring establishments AND the only 3-star Michelin onset in Japan.
It features 100% free-flowing natural hot springs and possesses a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by nature, while offering one of the most varied and deep onsen experiences.
It offers several types of hot springs pools (indoor, outdoor and private for families), but we just opted for the public indoor and outdoor experience. We went in December and was able to experience snow while bathing in the hot spring bath outside. It was such a soothing and relaxing experience. You can also pay for amenities such as toiletries and can buy some food/snacks.

The entrance fee is very reasonable, 940yen which is around 7usd. The opening hours are from 9am to 1am.

It is located in the center of Oita “Onsen Prefecture” and conveniently accessible. Only a 3 min. walk from Jigokubara bus stop. 25 min. ride on Oita Kotsu Bus bound for Kannawa from Beppu Station on JR Nippo Main Line.
