Berlin’s Secret Runway✈️

Today, the closed Berlin Tempelhof Airport makes its way into the story.

Interesting facts:

▪️The airport has existed since the 1920s and operated until 2008.

▪️The building itself is a monument to the gigantic scale of Nazi architecture.
But despite such a huge main building, the airport's capacity is limited. Initially, there weren't even runways. The Nazis didn't build them so as not to disrupt the symmetry of the structure. Both runways were built by the Americans when the airport belonged to West Germany during the Cold War.

▪️The airport has shelters with drawings inside. These shelters were part of the design. The drawings have survived since its construction.

▪️The airport is called Central Airport and is located in the city center. The main terminal has a stone floor.

▪️It is a protected monument. Even both runways are indestructible. Even though it's unprofitable, they're not tearing it down because it has a rich history, so they're using it as best they can.

Now, for example, you can stroll along the runway, dodge bicycles on the taxiways, climb the tower, and have a picnic on the grass right on the airfield. It's free.

And to get inside the terminal, walk from check-in to the gate, and visit the bunkers and hangars with aircraft, you need to book a group tour.

Cost: €17.50
