Built by the Blackpool South Jetty Company and designed by John Isaac Mawson, Central Pier opened on 30 May 1868 as a vibrant alternative to the genteel North Pier. From the start, its mission was clear: fun, not formality. It featured dance halls, steamboat excursions, and later, roller skating and fairground rides.
The pier stretches 339 metres into the Irish Sea, supported by screw-tipped cast iron piles—a Victorian engineering marvel. Over the decades, it evolved into a lively entertainment hub, with arcades, theatres, and bars. In 1990, the now-iconic 33-metre Ferris wheel was added, echoing the grandeur of Blackpool’s historic Winter Gardens wheel.
