The charm of a new space that you can experience at the exhibition hall
I recently visited the Vault Exhibition Hall located on the first basement floor of the main building of the Busan Museum of Modern and Contemporary History. This space, which was renovated from the vault of the former Busan branch of the Bank of Korea, exudes a different atmosphere from the entrance. From the thick iron gates and heavy pillars to the walls that show traces of time, the secretive feeling of the bank vaults of the past is still alive, and you can feel as if you are time traveling the moment you enter the exhibition hall.
A moving exhibition where artwork and history come together
The current exhibition is themed ‘Dialogue from the Past’ and artistically interprets the various memories and moments of change that the city of Busan holds. Currency from the past, props related to the economy, and video and sculpture works reinterpreted by young local artists are displayed throughout the hallways and vaults, making it fun to explore the alleys. Even those who were not usually interested in art were able to naturally become immersed in the works.
A special experience where the vault itself becomes an exhibition
The vault exhibition hall actively utilizes the unique structure of the vault in the exhibition hall. Thanks to the characteristics of the space, which has preserved its original form, such as the heavy and sturdy safe door, number dial, nameplates from the past, and coin storage, the themes of ‘time’ and ‘preservation’ were newly felt throughout the work. Each safe has a different theme, so you can feel yourself immersed in a new atmosphere every time you enter each safe.
