The Mohammed Ali Mosque was one of my most impressive sights in Cairo. Nestled within the Saladin Citadel, its towering dome and minaret captivate you instantly. The mosque commemorates Mohammed Ali, a monarch who significantly reformed Egypt and championed modernization, earning him the nickname "the father of modern Egypt."
The interior of the mosque is spacious and magnificent, with marble floors and chandeliers creating a solemn atmosphere that infuses a sense of tranquility and dignity upon entering. Furthermore, Mohammed Ali left behind an intriguing legacy: he gifted France an obelisk from the Luxor Temple as a diplomatic gift, which now stands in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. King Louis-Philippe of France, in return, gave him a broken clock, which is said to still not function. While this story is amusing, it also bears witness to the diplomatic dynamics between Egypt and France at the time.
Overall, the Mosque is not only a masterpiece of architectural beauty, but also carries a rich tapestry of history and culture, making it a must-see landmark in Cairo.
