So did I—until I read about “Lin Chong being exiled to Cangzhou” in Water Margin and the legendary “Iron Lion” from school textbooks. But visiting in person revealed so much more!
Cangzhou is known as:
✨ The Hometown of Martial Arts
✨ The Hometown of Acrobatics
✨ And the city with the longest stretch of the Grand Canal (Jing-Hang) flowing through it!
Only 2 hours by car or 1 hour by high-speed train from Beijing, Cangzhou is 100% worth a weekend trip. Here’s a 1-day self-driving itinerary packed with culture, history, and local eats to share with your besties!
🗺️ Itinerary Highlights
🏛️ 11:15 – [Cangzhou Museum (沧州博物馆)]
Head straight to the 3rd floor for the Cultural History Hall, and don’t miss the museum’s treasures:
Inlaid Gold Leopard Paperweight
Celadon Dragon Handle Pot
Tri-colored Porcelain Plate with Floral Motif
Jade Stone Lion
🕘 Open 9:00–17:00 (Closed on Mondays)
🎫 Free entry

🧵 13:15 – [China Grand Canal Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum (中国大运河非遗馆)]
Focus on the 1st floor to see a fascinating display of traditional crafts from six provinces along the Grand Canal—plus Cangzhou’s own non-material cultural gems.
🕘 Open 9:00–18:00 (Closed Mondays & Thursdays)
🎫 Free entry
🅿️ Spacious parking available
🏭 15:00 – [Dahua Industrial Heritage Culture Zone (大化工业遗存文化区)]
Right next to the heritage museum inside the Garden Expo Park.
Don’t miss the giant “Cangzhou” wall, perfect for photo ops! 📸
