When traveling in Chaoshan, don't miss the Nianci art. You can easily find surprises in many temples, archways, and even ordinary houses. The small figures carved on the roof are decorated with colorful porcelain pieces, creating an exquisite beauty under the sunlight. Local artisans particularly enjoy transforming traditional operas into creative themes, allowing us to see model operas such as "Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy," "Investiture of the Gods," and "Twenty-four Filial Exemplars" on the rooftops.
Where to See Nianci?
📍 Mianhu Yongchang Ancient Town
This temple from the Southern Song Dynasty features beautiful Qing Dynasty coffered ceilings and stunning Nianci on the roof, rich in color and figures.
📍 Shantou Tianhou Temple
This ancient building showcases modern Nianci figures on its roof, mostly based on the Three Kingdoms theme. The colors are relatively deep and dark, but it's easy to photograph from across the road with a telephoto lens.
📍 Shantou Guanyin Temple
This old building has a modern Nine-Dragon Wall at the entrance. The Nianci art here is intricate and exquisite, featuring many masterpieces by renowned artists.
📍 Chaozhou Qinglong Ancient Temple
This riverside temple dedicated to local deities is popular and boasts beautiful Nianci.
📍 Nianci Museum
Located outside the city, this small museum offers a direct understanding of the development of Nianci art. You can also see carving artists at work and experience the beauty of Nianci up close.
❤️Tips:
Nianci can be easily found on most sizable buildings in the Chaoshan area. If you plan to visit, bring a telephoto lens and choose the right time to avoid backlighting. Also, most rooftop Nianci has designs on both sides, so don't miss the back.
