๐ Wat San Pa Ko was built in 1916 by villagers who migrated from Kengtung in 1940 during the reign of King Rama V. The leaders, including Phra Ka Kham Heuang, Phu Jong Ti, Phu Jong Soi, Phu Loi, Phu Kung Na, and Phu Saen, led the villagers to clear the land, which had many trees called 'Ko,' hence the name of the temple and village, San Pa Ko.
๐ They built temporary buildings roofed with thatch and invited Tai Yai monks to reside there, providing spiritual support to the villagers. The temple has been continuously developed and expanded.
๐ In 1946, a vihara was built with a wooden floor and a roof made of clay tiles. In 1965, an ordination hall was constructed. From 1970 to 1975, the temple's surrounding wall was built.
๐ In 1976, the vihara was renovated, replacing the roof with tiles and adding decorative elements like Chofa and Naga finials.
๐ The temple was abandoned for a period but was later reestablished as a functioning temple with resident monks in 2013. It received royal recognition in 2014 and held the consecration ceremony in 2016.
๐ฐ The temple's architecture is in the Tai Yai style, with both the main vihara and the vihara for the day of birth featuring murals depicting Tai Yai traditions throughout the twelve months.
๐ฐ The multi-tiered vihara showcases Tai Yai art, with ancient ceiling paintings illustrating the zodiac animals according to Tai Yai, Burmese, and Tai Khun beliefs. Inside, there are three principal Buddha statues in Tai Yai style.
โบ The Hor Phra Upakut is believed by Tai Yai, Burmese, and Lanna people to house Phra Upakut, a powerful monk and arahant who enjoys the bliss of liberation in the underwater city.
โบ Additionally, the temple grounds feature Phra Chao Tan Jai and several Tai Yai architectural buildings worth visiting.
