🌊 Chiang Saen Lake was originally a small swamp. Later, the government built a dam to increase its water level, expanding it into a lake. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary on April 4, 1985, and a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on July 5, 2001. Covering 2,711 rai (approximately 1,000 acres), most of the area is swamp, with degraded forests surrounding it and narrow islands. There are small trees and approximately 20 rai (approximately 1,000 acres) of natural forest remaining. 🌏
✨️ This lake is a scenic riverside camping area, perfect for watching the sunrise and sunset. It's also a popular birdwatching destination, particularly for ducks and grebes. Thai cranes have even been spotted. There's a viewpoint bridge in the middle of the water, two bungalows that can accommodate approximately 40 tourists, and a camping area (bring your own tent) with restrooms and showers. There's an entrance fee to the Nong Bong Khai Wildlife Sanctuary for Thais and foreigners, as well as vehicle and camping fees. 🏕🏢
🤔 The legend of Chiang Saen Lake tells of a white eel that ate the city's ducks and geese. The city lord used cotton to wrap ducks and geese as fishing lines to catch eels at Mae Ha's house and distribute them throughout the city. Later, Indra's son heard the fragrant smell and asked the widow about the white eels. The widow said she hadn't received any. Indra's son advised her to stay indoors. At night, a loud noise erupted. By morning, the city had transformed into a lake, leaving only the widow's house as an island, known as Widow Island. 🧏♀️
