At Chongqing’s Jiefangbei,we experienced the district’s dual personality by day and night. By daylight, it’s a bustling urban showcase—luxury flagship stores glinting under the sun, street stalls wafting the aroma of suanlafen (spicy sour glass noodles), and us weaving through crowds, torn between Gucci and fiery hotpot joints,spoilt for choice in the most delightful way.
When dusk falls, Jiefangbei morphs into a cyberpunk wonderland: skyscrapers become canvases for dazzling LED animations, the monument itself gilded in golden light, and even the air seems to vibrate with the scent of chili and Sichuan peppercorns.
Staying here was our best decision! Our hotel, steps from Bayi Gourmet Street,let us savor midnight bingfen (iced jelly dessert) while overlooking neon-lit traffic rivers. Whether watching elders practice tai chi at dawn or grabbing late-night snacks from 24/7 convenience stores, Jiefangbei—with its gritty energy and futuristic glow,made us fall hard for Chongqing’s magical realism.
