🇮🇹Florence "Holy Trinity Bridge"

#AprilGoodDestinations2025

The Santa Trinità Bridge is the oldest existing elliptical arch bridge in the world. It was built between 1567 and 1569 by the Florentine architect Bartolomeo Amanati. Its elliptical arch structure breaks through the traditional semicircular design and is a representative work of Renaissance bridge engineering. When the German army retreated in 1944, the bridge was damaged by explosions, leaving only the base. It was rebuilt in 1958 using white Carrara marble according to the original drawings. The new bridge retains the three-span elliptical arches and carved railings. The bridge is 32 meters long and spans the middle section of the Arno River. It is adjacent to the medieval Ponte Vecchio on the east side and forms a triangular waterfront with the Ponte alla Carraia on the west side. The three ancient bridges, reflected in the river, connect the five-centuries history of bridge construction in Florence.
