Located on the shores of Lake Kawaguchi in Yamanashi Prefecture, the Kawaguchiko Maple Corridor is one of Japan's most renowned autumn foliage viewing spots, recognized as one of Japan's "100 Famous Fall Foliage Spots." Every autumn (approximately from early to mid-November), the approximately 1.5-kilometer trail along the lake is bathed in a vibrant display of red, gold, and orange, illuminated by the distant snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji and its reflection on the lake, creating a breathtaking autumnal spectacle. The nighttime illumination transforms the Corridor into a dreamlike corridor of light, with the leaves shimmering in the light, attracting countless photographers and tourists.
Getting there: From Shinjuku, Tokyo, take the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki Station, transfer to the Fujikyuko Line to Kawaguchiko Station, and then take a local bus for about 15 minutes to the Corridor. The Corridor is free and open 24 hours a day, with the illumination typically remaining until 10:00 PM. Visiting early in the morning or late in the evening is recommended to avoid the crowds and capture the stunning contrast between the maple leaves and Mount Fuji in the morning mist or at sunset.
